Hey all. After researching laptops for awhile I think I've decided on the Sager NP9390. I just have a few questions.

1: Where is the best place to buy it? Right through Sager, or go through a third party?
2: What screen do you guys suggest? It will be used for a bit of everything.
3: Is it worth doing the copper upgrade?
4: Is the GTX 780m the best GPU at the moment for games?
5: Will this laptop dual boot, and play well with Linux?

    Thanks,
    -RYknow

    2. Unless your doing photoediting that REQUIRES the color accuracy - the base unit while do you just fine.
    3. No - if you really want to - do it yourself. Keep in mind increasing thermal mass doesn't necessarily mean an increase in cooling. You still need to remove the heat, without doing that your just prolonging the overheated condition.
    4. If you have the money to spend, yes.
    5. Yes, the only issue can be driver support for your GPU.

I hear rumors about gtx785m, so it might come right after amd's 8990m (which again is rumored to be released beginning next month).
Perhaps its wiser to wait 4-5 weeks before making a purchase.

There's always new hardware coming out, and if you wait for the newest you'll always be waiting. No confirmed information on the 785m yet, nor the 8990 for that matter as far as I'm aware. The 780 as it stands is the most powerful gaming card and it's a beast for sure. Look at some benchmarks and if you're happy with what you see, then no need to wait.

Such cards would not involve big performance increases anyway.

Considering there was not a 7990 and there are aready rumors surfacing about the 9000 series - I wouldn't base any decision on a hope and a prayer over a 8990m that has no confirmed information other then things from the rumor mill..

Hey guys, thanks for all the quick responses.

As far as the GPU. I think for the games I'm interested in (assassins creed series, and BF3/4) the 780m will be a good fit. I don't plan to buy this laptop for about a month or so from now. I'm also not going to wait for the newest...cutting edge card. When I asked about the best card at the moment...it was basically just a which is better...780m or HD8970.

I saw a reply about which screen to get. I guess I'm just curious which you guys suggest between matte or glossy. I don't ever use my laptop outside. I have a G50vt-x1 right now, which has a glossy display. I do like this display, so I think at the moment I'm leaning towards glossy. Just wondering if you guys have some good points on why not to go glossy?

    Thanks,
    -RYknow

I do prefer a matte screen. If you have a desktop with a LCD screen on it chances are that is also matte so you can compare that to your current glossy notebook screen.

I personally like the matte as well, especially if you ever intend to take the laptop outside or to a public place. The copper upgrade helps some. And the 780M is indeed your top of the line option right now. :)

For the most part, people seemed to have been able to use Linux without major hassles or workarounds. If you're using a distro with more support than others - such as Ubuntu or Mint - then you shouldn't have many problems, and you can dual boot fine. :)

Matte is for you if you are in environment where you get a lot of reflections or you are using it outside, if you are going to be able to use it mostly inside without reflections then a "glare" type screen will give a sharper image.

That's good news about Linux support. Just wondering if any of you guys are running a sager with Linux currently. I'm just curious how the back lit keyboard works in linux. I'm going to assume the various color schemes and whatnot probably aren't going to work with linux? It's not a deal breaker by any means. It would just be nice to at least pick what color I want the keyboard backlighting to be.

That's great! I'll be sure to give that a shot!

So, I plan to buy the laptop without msata's installed. I was planning to install them myself. Just wondering what you guys think about gskill msata's? I switched to gskill ram a few years back and it's been fantastic ram. I'll probably switch all the ram in the laptop to gskill while I'm at it.

My buddy has a sager 9150 with a matte screen. I honestly can't decide between glossy or matte. I think it's going to come down to a game time decision. haha

Ohh...and just because I can...I'm going to throw this out there...GO SOX!! 3-2 lead over Detroit and coming back to Fenway!! I live in the heart of red sox nation...and I'm a huge fan!! =] Great series so far!

Yeah we see most people using the Intel and Crucials. The Plextor drives are pretty nice too though. Haven't heard anything on the Gskill mSATA actually, but as a fan of their RAM myself should treat you fine. Just be sure to look into the warranty details.

Crucial, Intel, and recent Samsung SSDs are good. In fact newer SSDs are better then the older ones.

    Well in most cases, a 256gb M4 will out perform a 240GB M500.
