Laptop is sager np2740. Currently in Mexico. I have my own internet modem/router. I connect an ethernet cable from my laptop to the modem. My ethernet port broke on my laptop a while back so i bought an ethernet adapter.

    http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters...d=1447734118&sr=1-4&keywords=ethernet+adapter

Everyday throughout the day, my internet would disconnect for less than 5 seconds then connect right back. Thus it has the 2 computer icon shown in the bottom right since i'm connected wired. But it would then disconnect and show the wifi signal no bars etc as if i'm not connected on wifi. Then after a few seconds it would connect right back and thus 2 computer icon showing again.

Does anyone know why my laptop does this? Someone had mentioned to me this could be because of google DNS? I have no idea what that is. But someone said that could be the reason.

Could it be my laptop? I'm thinking well since i'm not using original ethernet port because it broke... that shouldn't be issue since i connect an ethernet adapter to my usb port without any issues.

Someone tells me i could fix this by disabling my wifi. They said reason is because if it switches between wired and wifi, this is what happens. Does anyone know how do i do this? I was told there is a physical button i can click on to do this? Someone said i can also do this in bios but that is somethign i dont want to touch.

The thing is i want to be able to use wired most of the time. However, i also would like to use it as wifi later on so i would like to know if theres an easy way to do this. Such as a button or option thats quick and not like having to go to BIOs each time to turn wifi on and off.

So i like to know how to fix this on my sager np2740 laptop.

FN + F11 should turn it in to airplane mode (turning off wireles and bluetooth), for an easy way to turn that on and off. Otherwise, you might be able to disable the wireless card in the device manager if you wanted to.

The computer should only default to WiFi if the LAN connection drops; LAN takes precedent over WLAN. You can disable your WiFi per Pat's suggestion, but I suspect your LAN connection may still drop intermittently. It could be the adapter, the Ethernet cable, or possibly the modem/router. Try another Ethernet cable and a different port on the box, if available.

Just curious, does this happen on someone else's internet? And have you tried doing a clean install of the drivers for your network adapters? What have you done so far to try to remedy it?

I haven't done anything. I'm wired to my own internet modem which also is a router. I do sometimes use another wifi connection in my building if my internet doesn't work. My building has 2 other wifi connections but these are shared with a lot of other apartments so i never use it if ever since i got my own internet/modem.

But of course if i do use the buildings wifi connection... well im using the wifi since I'm not connecting to a modem wired.

I never did any clean install of drivers or anything like that.

How am i suppose to do the fn + f11? Do that when on wireless or when not connected to wifi? So after i do that, if i wanted to connect via wifi... do i have to press fn +f11 each time before connecting to wifi or can i just connect to wifi as i do normally? The reason why i ask this is because even when i start up my laptop, my internet connection is always in wifi and i have to left click and disconnect it... then once i do that... computer logo shows up.

FN + F11 is a manual switch yes, when off the wifi wont find any networks (as it is off), you would need to press FN + F11 to be able to use it again.

Hey all. My laptop is connected to an external monitor that i use. But i then disconnected my monitor from my laptop to only use the laptop. I then pressed fn and f11. That does not turn off the wifi. Am i suppose to disconnect the wifi first on the bottom right with the wifi bars first? I tried that. Still it shows the wifi connections available.

Still having the issue of my wired internet going out few seconds throughout the day every single day it seems.

Check your cable and that the port looks clear, do you have the latest hotkey software installed?

Try disabling your WiFi adapter in device manager.

What do you mean check cable and port looks clear? One thing i want to mention is my usb port in my sager laptop broke a long time ago.

So i use a cable ethernet port where i stick the ethernet cable to it.

How do i know if i have latest hotkey software installed? I don't really do any updates on computer.

Check the cable is ok (use it with another device) and check the pins look ok physically in the port.

Try downloading the latest hotkey drivers off the sager website and installing them.

I only have one ethernet cable. It should not have issues because i rarely had this happen ever.

What do you mean use the cable with another device? Which cable are you talking about?

Is there a way up update hotkey driver easier? I have no idea which way to do this.

Do you think there is something that involves the google dsn that could be related?

It's extremely unlikely if not impossible for Google DNS or any DNS to be causing you to disconnect from the internet if that's what is happening - not that you are simply unable to resolve pages but still able to ping things, use Skype, etc. You could switch back to your ISP's default DNS if you would like to know for sure but I doubt it is that.

As for use the cable in another device, if you have another computer or laptop or whatever, try plugging your cable into that device. If your internet doesn't work on that, then it's likely the cable that is the issue. Cables can go bad but I believe that's fairly rare.

If they get pinched in a doorway or there was some error in manufacturing then it can cause damage or if the connector itself has some issue.

Yes, or merely bending too tightly (tucked away behind radiators/furniture). Replaced a few and attached new connectors with one of those RJ45 crimp tool thingies. Since there's several copper wires actually used, it can happen the connection is 'present', but not actually functioning correctly. Also, the wires are solid (not stranded), so any break will be clean; bend one way and the ends touch (connection ok), bend another and the ends separate (connection failed).

Oh god, I had to make cables for one of my networking classes in school, I HATED it... my hands weren't really steady/precise enough for putting the bundle of individual wires into the heads without jambling them, this is why I'm not a neurosurgeon, lol

I only have 1 ethernet cable and 1 computer here. I don't have another device to plug my ethernet cable into it. So how would i know if its my ethernet cable then?

Is there a chance it could be my ethernet adapter?

What about my usb ports? I do have 3 usb ports and one of them seem to have a bit of issue so i use the other 2.

I would maybe try another ethernet cable as people have mentioned, in case there is any kind of physical damage to it (you might not be able to see it sometimes), even if you just have to borrow one from a neighbor possibly. Maybe even try using someone else's internet, to see if the same issues keep happening.

You could try the different USB ports on your computer, but I don't know if that would necessarily be the cause of the issue, but doesn't hurt to try. You could check the manufacturer or the ethernet adapter's website, and see if they have a new driver to download that might help. Maybe plug your ethernet cable in to your model/router in a different port on the back of it (many will have about 4 ports).

You could contact your internet provider and see if they have reported any drops in connection or maybe any issues on the line. That might be possibility as well, that it is on their side. They might be able to test if there is an issue with the signal from their side, or have you reset some settings on your router.

Keep trying different options like that, until it either fixes the problem, or keeps narrowing down what the issue might be.
