Lots of people seem to find the Clevo M570RU noisy even for everyday work and surfing which is a major concern of mine.

    1. Does the Penryn processor make a noticable difference to the heat generated during less graphic demanding work tasks such as surfing?

    2. Is the difference big enough to make the fans less noisy?

    3. Has anyone undervolted the Penryn on a Clevo 570 successfully, resulting in less heat and noise?

    4. (Has nothing to do with Penryn) During simple tasks, will the graphic card downgrade itself so that fan is inactive?

I am about to buy a Clevo but will only buy the Penryn if it makes the laptop less noisy.

The fans, with or without penryn, are no longer that noisy due to a fan firmware update, which gives the user the option from 3 fan speeds. Thus the noise is there, but not as much as before, and now it is at a constant speed.

But is it possible with Penryn and undervolting to get the laptop cool enough so the fans will not be needed at all during surfing and word processing? Or at least reduce the fan noise considerably (less noise than medium speed)?

no... the penryn is not more silent... and not more faster... it do less heat but not enough to make a difference... and it take less power... but you gonna get an extra.. what 1-2min?

    MegaBUD, let's face it:
    1. it's faster (sometimes by 50%, especially in multimedia applications);
    2. it lasts longer (according to Anandtech their laptop lasted a maximum of 50 some minutes and a minimum of 20);
    3. it will generate less heat (which will mean that the fans will not be on for so much time.
Get it if you can (the CPU that is).

I appreciate the answers so far, thank you.

Any comments from someone with a Penryn processor? (Or someone with a theoretical knowledge?) Especially if that someone also has tried undervolting the laptop.

i think the "noise" issue is overblown.

when i had mt 5792 i didnt notice any "fan noise" at all and that was playing call of duty for awhile.

now that my 5792 is now a 5793 same thing.

    its a perfect Rig.

oh and megabud will hate this.

Zero dead pixels. on my 5792 and now my 5793

It`s impossible not no notice fan noise. You either have a lot of siblings or a slight deafness :D
You can clearly hear when the gpu fan kicks in and stays on, just take it into a zero noise room and listen. You will know what I mean.

    dude. the noise is nothing.

if you want a laptop with no noise get a pad of paper and a pen!!

Dude, noise is something to be expected during gaming, since it`s a gaming laptop, not under normal operation ie browsing and such. Or maybe some people love their laptops too much to even consider improvements to it.
People like me , complaining about the fan noise were what determined Sager to release that firmware. So give it a rest, it`s already the second thread you reply without common sense.

Guys complaining the laptop makes to much noise in class need to rethink it.

the footprint of the laptop makes it really impractical to take to class.

if your gpu is heating up enough with just taking notes in class that you have a problem.

again my 5792 and now 5793 fan "noise" is nothing

    asus C90 is worse.

but thanks for being the thread police.

My (undervolted) current laptop is dead silent until I start to race GTR2 or play some other game. Unfortunately the X700 graphics is a bit weak nowdays. But I think it would be possible to manufacture a laptop who is flexible enough to run without fans while surfing even though they are necessary while gaming. How hard can it be?
    ;)

u gotta consider that the fans generally just go on for the gpu, and its one hell of a gpu. w/ the med fans on all the time i would assume that while surfing it wouldnt have to throttle up and ppl say that med fans rather than full fans is a HUGE improvement.

...or a $ony vaio like mine, although, come to think of it, a pad of paper and a pen wouldn't crash as often as the d**ned vaio does :mad2: , given the money situation, that may have to be my short-term upgrade path:cry:

As GZ pointed out, a power profile could be set to make the system run at low clocks so that for browsing, school and such the fans would never kicked in. It`s something that now with XP I managed. - Minimal power management, and powermizer on got me no fan noise whatsoever :D
I do love my laptop, but if there are improvements out there, I will always welcome them.
    Gah.
