I was thinking about ordering a NP5796 from xoticPC but I heard that they are switching from 9800m GT to GTS soon. I was wondering if it is true or not (If it is I will be making the order immeadiately).
Also I read from one of the review about NP5796 saying that when you plug in usb devices the connector only goes half way in, did any of you notice this problem?
Thanks a bunch![]()

Hi Kirbychiu
i was told nirvidia are phasing out the GT cards to be replace by the GTS so if you defanately want a GT card i would order soon. -
Can I get sauce on this? -
its been posted on here for the past month at least.
might take ime to find it again. -
The way I understood it nvidia plans to shift from the 65nm to 55nm. But since many people posted on the forum that they have trouble finding 9800GT laptops and they are most told that they only have GTS... the rumor might be true.
-
GT is hard to get now in Europe.
So yeah you better hurry if you want it.

Just got the email at 12:49PM - the GT is gone from the NP8660, and the GTS starts shipping Monday.
-
I don't think it's a big deal, when you consider the benchmarks:
I believe Gophn & Nirvana owe notebookcheck an apology, they denounced these benchmarks more than anyone a month ago -
-

I don't understand what the fuss is about, they are practically identical in performance, the clock speeds make up for the stream processors apparently.
9800M GTS
* G94 core.
* 64 Stream Processors.
* 600 MHz core clock.
* 1500 MHz shader clock.
* 800 MHz memory clock.
* 256 bit memory interface.
* 51.2 GB/s memory bandwidth.
* 19.2 billion texels/s texture fill rate.
* 288 GigaFLOPS. lol, nvidia's gigaflops...
9800M GT
* G94 core.
* 96 Stream Processors.
* 500 MHz core clock.
* 1250 MHz shader clock.
* 800 MHz memory clock.
* 256 bit memory interface.
* 51.2 GB/s memory bandwidth.
* 24.0 billion texels/s texture fill rate.
* 360 GigaFLOPS!....(ignore this..) -
oopps!
silly me.
sorry nvidia -
The fuss is, when you overclock the 9800GT to 600/1500/950 it destroys anything a GTS can do. -
Shane@DARK. Company Representative
-
, I don't even overclock my desktop that much, so that is foreign to me. I understand what your saying though, if you want to overclock your gpu in the 8660, 9800M GT was (
) ,the way to go.... nothing to cry over, (video games) people...
-
Well the 9800GTS can probably be overclocked too, right?
-
I'm sure it can, let's see....in order for it to just keep up, it would need to do 700/1750/1000? I've seen someone here that claims they get close to those numbers, but he's the only one. I doubt very seriously that you will on that 15" lappy, as much as I doubt he can run his card for more than 10 minutes being overclocked so high.
The thing is this. When we have a video card, we’ll pay more for a faster card. Sometimes the price doesn’t out way the gain. If you’re talking about a difference of $60, then I’m going for the higher card. The GTX is even less of a difference to the GT than the GT has over the GTS. Now do you think people would still opt for the GT, when the GTX is only a $60 difference? There is nothing showing the GTX card to actually be that much faster than the GT if both had equal clocks. Remember, the GTX is 500/1350/800 vs. GT’s 500/1250/800. Now unless the GTX can be overclocked higher than the GT, then it doesn’t make any sense either. -
seeing as i have said this many times.... the 9800mgt IS THE 8800mgtx i have had 4 OF THEM and they all said 8800 gtx on the sticker on the board (ones i installed for local people i do work for) and they said they are officially phasing tht 8800 out of production i kinda figured the 9800m gt would go away as well..
-
I'm glad I got a 9800m GT when I did. Such a killer graphics card. The 9800m GTS just sounds...lackluster...sigh
Just kidding. This is no big deal unless you are overclocking. -
but later GT will be coming back out?
-
^^^ prob not.. nvidia is phasing out the 65nm and the 8x00 series which is what the 9800gt is based one. the newer ones will be the 55nm you prob will not see them re-released imo but anythings possible with nvidia
-
if only GTS for 1.9k... i whether get a gateway
-
Typical of nVidia and their confusion games. Am I the only one who is annoyed by their recent naming scheme?
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
So than wouldn't you be able to find the 9800m gt online somewhere (newegg, tiger direct) for a lot cheaper?
-
I don't know how are the prices in US but in EU the price difference between GT and GTS is 100$ so I'd go with the GTS always
. I mean, even with the overclocking of the GT you'd probably not get more than 2-4 fps more in a game, thats not enough for a 100$ difference.
About the naming of cards, I remember reading that it will change again so we'll be more lost than before.
-
Wanna fish out the money twice for another replacement when the GPU finally keels over? That's okay for you mayhap, but for many M860TU buyers this investment represents a long-term deal.
This goes in addition to ioaniro's comments, it's an increase from 0.5-2.5 fps over the GTS to 4fps through overclocking. Not really anything considering the following;
- Once you get above 30fps it doesn't really matter. We can't tell the difference without a clocking program. Both these cards will already get over 30fps with most games on high settings. It's all just bragging rights after that.
- Those rights that will be outdated within a year.
- The GT still isn't going to become the Crysis killer we'd all like, even overclocked. Just buy it on XBox 360 instead anyway. It looks much better on a HD widescreen than an 15.4 glossy. -
-
??
No need to speculate on that, since the ones with the GT can tell you just about what the average FPS is when the GT is overclocked. I get 4 to 5 FPS more just overclocking the CPU thru FSB overclocking, and with GPU overclocking it can get as high as a 10 FPS difference. Now that is comparing the results of the GT vs. GT (GT same as 8800GTX), not the GT vs. GTS which the GT is already superior to. That might not mean much to you, but having more FPS on an online server helps the hell out of me.
The 7811 has been shipping with the GTS since its debut, and I have yet to see any posted games with FPS showing it to be within a FPS or two compared to the GT, only word of mouth. But what I have seen, is that the system locks up, and some wanting to even downclock the card. Hell, it might not even be related to the GTS, but Ill rather take my chances with the GT since it is proven to be a fantastic card.
If you think you cant see anything over 30 FPS without using something to benchmark it, then no, youre better off getting the GTS.
Ive been overclocking any and everything I get as far as computer stuff is concerned, and I still have just about everything I bought from the beginning with no warranty. So the notion of it kills stuff quicker is a myth, as we dont know what the life span of the thing was to begin with. I can leave everything at default, but that is no guarantee that I wont be paying for another card later on down the road because of GPU failure or any other failure. There is not a person alive that can tell me my notebook will last so many years without a problem if I leave it at default, which is what warranties are for. If that was not the case, then why bother with one.
I believe someone said that people buy their 15 gaming notebook for the long run who the hell doesnt buy something with the intent to have it for the long run? You think just people who buy a 15 gaming laptop have these concerns? What would concern me, is why the hell I have to buy something at the same cost or more (it has been reported) for something that is less. If not that, then at least leave the decision up to me (the buyer) of choosing a GTS over a GT and vies versa.
I dont need any benchmarks from a site that says the 9800MGTS is superior to the 8800MGTX when I know that is bull. So anything else they say, I take with a grain of salt. -
Its funny that you talk about crysis and than suggest we get a console which doesn't even have Crysis for it. No offense but you are moronically comparing a stationary non-mobile gaming system to an all purpose mobile gaming computer. Not to mention that most people who buy sagers are PC gamers and prefer PC gaming over the unsatisfying noobfest that is console gaming.
Seriously, analyze what you are writing before you post it. -
-
Wow, touched a nerve.
Oh, the point is missed. We all know the 9800M GT/ 8800M GTX is superior but it's by such a small fraction that it seems barely significant.
As for the 10 fps more, well the more you force out of it the shorter it's use. And I guess that score is also dependent on the game your playing too.
Around 30fps is the average a human eye reads for a comfortable, non-jittery picture. Hence why most video cameras only use up the same amount of frames.
I'm sure the most ardent gamers superior eyesight demands more though.
As for results with a GTS, if you need screenshots, there are other people on the forum who have a GTS GPU. Make friends, ask them for some screenshots. I'm sure they'll be happy to help out if the few graphs there are don't give you anything to trust. -
By the way, the NP8660 is only customizable with the 9800GTS on XoticPC now. I wonder if the 9800GTX will go down in price for the 5796, or if they just switch the GT with the GTS too.
-
Shane@DARK. Company Representative
There's no word yet on the GT being removed from the 5796 - as of now, it's still available. And I don't think that the GTX will go down in price, but we'll all see when the time comes.
-
I play Counter Strike, CoD, Quake 3 and 4, Madden all in 1920x1200 max settings which is funny, they left those resolutions out. The site did say they used max performing hardware; your values might be different using lesser hardware. That was nice of them to say, but it still doesnt add up to reality.
In class or somewhere on the road, Party Poker is always a welcome, as well as any score or post you mind showing with the GTS and what it post as far as FPS? -
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
I would of never even bought the M860tu if it didn't have the 9800M GT.
BTW you can still order it with the M860tu with the 9800m GT from http://www.killernotebooks.com -
Yeah, the graphs shows my card being blown away, so post what you got with the GTS...since I'm not sold that the few graphs gives me any reason to believe. -
why not give the M860tu another try? -
Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
Then again anything else is user opinion. The noobfest comment for example. Depends on your preference. I could say that a despite really enjoying gaming in both formats that more people have come out of a console gaming session happier, in my exerience. You could say the opposite and it doesn't make either statement any less true. After all the purpose of a good game is fun, not for the ability to put a laptop on a stand and say how proud of it I am because it can reach this level of performance.
As for comparisons, the mobilty isn't really part of the argument here, especially if we're talking about using the laptop for overclocking.
Would you get enough time out of it, especially if you decided to overclock the GPU by quite a bit? Most people are reporting 2 hour battery times on saving settings and just over an hour for gaming. It'll be even shorter with all this overclocking.
Most people who will buy this machine to play lengthy gaming sessions, with an overclocked GPU and all settings high will play so near a power socket.
I'm okay with seeing those results as I don't have either card to say otherwise or prove it wrong. If I stumble on something I'll see what I can do and post it here. -
Unless nvidia releases a 9800M GT replacement fairly soon, i may be reconsidering my desicion to purchase an 860TU. If all it has is a 9800M GTS, the why not go with the new gateway FX model for a lot cheaper?
-
The point of buying an 860TU is to get a 15" laptop with a high end video card. The gateway is a 17" laptop.
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
-
the 9800M GTS is still a high end card!
-
I'd consider any video card of a current generation that has a 256 bit memory bus to be high-end. I still think the 9800M GTS is high-end, while the 9700M GT is maybe on the high side of mid-range as it has a 128 bit memory bus.
-
I always thought GTX is high end and GT, GTS mid-high end
. Guess we all understand those nvidia numbers in a differnet way
.
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
Ok, but heres the thing, Everyone was on about the m860tu being the fastest 15.4in to date. and with the gpu change, the m15x easily beats it out. What 3dmarok06 scores does the gts get?
-
With the current numbering scheme, I understood that cards ending in 400 and below with low end, 500-700 were mid range, and 800-900 were high end. Nvidia and their numbers:confused2:
-
sorry someone plz explain once again y is Nvida note offer 9800m GT?
-
Neil@Kobalt Company Representative
Lets remember that when the 8800M GTX was replaced with the 9800M GT the performance was pretty much identicle but the price lowered substantially (several hundred $). The best way to look at it is that the 9800M GTX is the replacement for the 8800M GTX - 98GTX is the top of the range (88GTX replacement) and the 98GTS is a very good performer (1-2% lower than the 88GTX) but much cheaper.
If you take into account the pricre drop between the 88GTX and 98GT then it all makes sense. The 98GTS is a performance GPU second only to the 98GTX and then we have the 9600s etc below them in the mid range.
And lets face it that if Clevo had shoehorned a 98GTX into the 860TU we would have the fastest 15.4" in the world but we would have the fastest overheating laptop in the world -
Who cares about having the best 3dmark title? Seriously, I'd rather have a point or two less than an m15x in that score and have a laptop that will work for the period of time I intended to invest in it.
Who here likes to put out 3-4k worth of technology and have it destroy itself in front your very eyes? Not me.
9800m GTS is still a high end card. Based on Nvidia numbers, its in the high end range. Now if the m860tu was now being outfitted with the 9600m GT, then we'd have something to cuss about. -
Still a step backwards no matter how small.
Is Clevo/Sager switching from 9800M GT to GTS?
