i have a friend who found a sager 5793 and wonder if ebay was safe to buy it.
any thought would be helpful

it is safer for the buyer than for the seller.. usually.
just make sure to pay with a credit card (through Paypal, if needed), then if anything goes wrong, then you can contact your credit card company and they will not hold you liable and terminate the transaction. -

Paypal, is what makes it safe, also you can look at a sellers feed back score, and what other people have said about them in their ratings.
Personally I wouldn't make a purchase from someone with a low feed back rating, and I'd be careful to purchase from someone who doesn't have many feedback ratings. -
Clevo vendors (like Sager and Pro-Star) are currently liquidating that model.
You will get more for the money if you get it through them.
For instance, for $1400:
- Core 2 Duo T8100 2.10GHz (or 2.5GHz for +$175)
- 4GB DDR2
- 9800M GTS
- 200GB 7200rpm or 320GB 5400rpm
- 2X Blue-Ray Read/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive -
Make sure they have at least 98.5%+ good feedback (in my opinion) also, see what thoer bad feedback is about...
Make sure you use a Paypal or Credit Card.
Paypal will ensure you have your product and will refund you for any money lost, if the buyer is shady.
Thats for Buying... Assuming you arent interested in Selling details... -

No, I would not use Paypal at all. Use Escrow.com, imo (eBay's escrow service). It IS safer for buyers though. I've personally switched to EBid, as have a ton of users in the last few months, due to EBay policy changes that don't protect anyone, restrict payment and feedback.

thanks for the help. i will pass on the info.
why are they discon. the 5793???? -
-
then i need to wait a little longer for the 5796 to come down in price
-
Also, check if there is a warranty remaining on it and if the warranty will still be valid. Verify that you can repair this laptop if you didn't bought through an authorized reseller (ie eBay). -
I lost $900 when i sold my old Vaio. I shipped it, the money from the buyer was in my paypal account. I spent it a couple days later. Then Paypal reversed the charges, and put me at -$900. And refunded the buyer after she had already gotten it and i lost the money. I called and called. They couldnt do anything... didnt know why, said that i somehow broke policy, but i dont think i did, AND SHE GOT THE PC, basically for free and i had to pay $900 for it (AGAIN)
So, i got skrewed. I try not to sell anything worth alot of $$ on ebay anymore. -

My experience was that Paypal protected me and got my money back, maybe your friend didn't follow all the guidelines.
Is Ebay safe?
