It is out performed by 970m Sli and 980m Sli. It's price is higher than the Sli. Mount 1 GTX 980 means you can't have a sli. Why are people so excited?

The MSI GT80 Titan will have TWO GTX 980 (desktop) cards in SLI.
We will probably also get those cards to work in the Clevo P870DM and if they're standard MXM, Clevo P570WM. -
I take it you're referring to the P870DM? The thing with SLI is that not all programs/games work well with it. For example, most Blizzard games don't support SLI. Some programs support it but are still glitchy. Some support it well, but you only see a 30% performance gain.
In other words, the are plenty of times where a single 980 will perform better than a 970/980M SLI setup.
However, when it comes to the P870DM, I agree that a SLI setup makes more sense. But in the case of other machines, putting in a single 980 means the machine can be smaller and lighter than a SLI machine.

For gaming, the SLI 980m is probably the better option. But people using it for more of a work station, if the programs they are using aren't SLI compatible, than the second 980m is just a waste and 980 desktop is a nice step up from a single 980m.
It's a nice option to have, depending on what your needs may be.Spartan@HIDevolution and i_pk_pjers_i like this. -
So finally we have a desktop GPU in a laptop... never could have imagined that the last time I was here. I think it could well be time to upgrade considering my 8800MGTX died about three years ago and I've not played a game since.
It's a shame they're doing away with optical drives though.i_pk_pjers_i and TomJGX like this. -

Only for the reason that I have a lot of movies on Blu-ray. Other than that I see your point.

We've seen a big preference for single GTX 980 in the P870DM / XMG P726. From speaking to several customers about their choice, they are informed already about the performance of different GPU options but in general feel that if they can get a desktop 980 performance in a laptop then there's not much point paying more for 980M SLI.....plus it removes all SLI niggles compared to 970M. Not my view but what customers have said to me!

Yea, SLI980m is always priced higher than 980 on P870 in all the shops I checked.
-
I was going for the Desktop 980 but was told it wasn't yet available so decided to go 980M SLI.
I think those extra 1024 cores will help with my 4k resolution in games that support SLI to get that smooth 60fps framerate.
Plus it should make it easier to upgrade to SLI 980s in the future since I'll have two heatsinks, fans and the SLI cable already.DreDre likes this. -

Two 980Ms is still really potent yes, if you are going extreme resolutions/frame rates they will serve you better for now than a single 980.

Single 980 laptops are also the "Oculus Ready" bar that has been set, where you generally want single card only to avoid stutter/driver/latency issues.
That being said, I've had a 980 in my desktop and used DSR to run 2560x1440p for my DK2 and it was barely scraping over that 75hz requirement in some of the Triple-A type games (Alien Isolation, Elite Dangerous etc). 90hz on the CV1 will be interesting. -
Update, stores in china sell gtx 980 laptop for 9999 rmb. That is 1570USD
-

They will be pricey, we will see what cards become available at if they are slightly more wide spread.

I'm interested to see how the different wattage 980 cards compare to the 980m SLI and the higher wattage cards (for instance the SLI 980 120w compared to the 980 200W to the 980m SLI).i_pk_pjers_i likes this. -

Dear everyone,
we figured: this thread is a good place for our survey: GTX 980 or GTX 980M SLI - what is the better choice? Please take a minute to answer our 4 questions. It adresses Clevo P751DM (XMG U706), P775DM (XMG U716) and P870DM (XMG U726). We will publish the results in one of our forums in about 3 weeks - it will help us and Clevo to better understand the opinion of the community.

A lower wattage 980 in sli would be the ideal but most expensive setup.

As far as I know, I haven't heard of anything in the works for a 980 SLI model from Clevo. The MSI GT80 is the only one on the horizon I have heard of at this point. The AW 18 still needs a refresh, as it is still using 4th gen processor, but not sure what might happen with any possible refresh there either.

Does anyone think that the desktop 980 will ever work in a np9377sm-a \ P377sm-a? I love my 2x980m's but maybe you know 4 years down the road or longer this might be something fun...
???
-
Four years down the road you will have Volta powered 1180Ms or w/e they call it and they will be way faster than a 980 (desktop) card.
-
-
They probably will. Just will need new heatsinks most likely for the hbm powered dies.
I feel like nVidia will stick with MXM. -

Not sure that the performance gain would be worth the cost (if it ever became doable), though.

I hope module design is still a thing 4 years from now. . . . With the current trend, it won't be.

I think with HBM shrinking size requirements it's certainly possible we see it brought back in line.

I think that modular designs have got some improvement room such as having a cutout for a small HBM module on a card, this was you can keep the motherboard layers down and keep the vertical height down.

youre mentioning the 980 in the same breath as the P751DM, am i reading this correctly?
answered the survey and also chose "already ordered" in question 3, since yeah, im sticking with my dark knight for the time being -
@jaybee83 Slightly wishful thinking there ;-) My colleague posted the survey, not quite sure the U706 was mentioned.
Thanks for the survey reply though! -
ah too bad! well, one is still allowed to hope, right?
