I guess this is a silly question, but would somebody mind to briefly clarify this for me?

What's the difference between the normal Quad Core processor and the Xeon Quad Core processor?? Is it like the extreme version for the dual series?

    Many thanks in advance

xeon is marketed as a server processor (as opposed to a standard desktop one). Also there already are extreme quads.

Extreme is a series that means the processors have an unlocked multiplier.

hmm that is a good question.

basically intel xeon is not an overclocked core2quad, as in the case with extreme, but rather a totally different build.

the price difference betweeen xeon and c2q is substantial, because xeon is used mainly as a server processor, while quad core is a desktop processor.

you'd be better off comparing core 2 quad vs core 2 extreme / xeon vs itanium processor

also, after looking on newegg, it appears that a lot of the xeon processors are actually socket 771 instead of 775, which means they require a different motherboard (like how amd and intel require different motherboards).

Thanks for the responses, but in bottom-line terms for gaming, would xeon add anything substantial? Or would a normal quad core be good enough...

core 2 quad would be more than enough for games, core 2 extreme would be even better since its an overclocked version of core 2 quad.

There is now a Q9650 which runs at 3GHz, only 0.16GHz slower than Intels fastest dual core CPU :)

You can compare the Q9550 directly to the XEON X3360 as you can the Q9450 to the X3350 and the Q9650 to the X3370. They are basically the same chip but the XEONs have I/OAT additions which make them better for server/networking situations. We (as some other companies) use them in our notebook chassis as compatability is identical to their equivilent Core 2 Quads.

The best way to look at it is that the XEONs are the cream of the Core 2 Quads - they may run slightly cooler, may overclock slightly higher but will perform identically in every other capacity.

i doubt any normal user would require a Xeon Quad. a Q6600 would be overkill for any needs anyway.

My next upgrade (in 2-3 years) wil be a new video card and the XEON 3370. In the last 3 days I was using all 4 cores at 100 % load almost continuous.
