I'm running a dual boot with mine and have XP Pro 64 installed and quite frankly, it's giving me a lot of headache. Not the OS itself but getting all of my hardware to operate properly. I can't install the drivers for the webcam, I can't enable SLi, won't install ethernet drivers, etc. So I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who has XP Pro 64 running stably on their system with all their hardware functioning properly. Thanks.

I don't recall anyone able to get XP X64 functioning properly. There is very little driver support for XP X64.

How much of a performance difference is there between 32 bit and 64 bit?

    no difference really.

the XP 32-bit is much more viable and has full support of drivers for SLI and such.

I was able to get everything working for me, including SLI, ethernet, the webcam, and the capture card. The only problems I had were my external mouse lacking drivers (logitech MX 700) and some strange bluetooth issue that I think was more a problem with blue solie than the drivers. (some features seemed to be missing or something, didn't look into it much as I've never used bluetooth much before)
The bluetooth did actually work though. I was able to transfer files from my phone using it.

While I can get everything working inside the laptop, a lot of external things don't have drivers, and some programs aren't compatible, like virtual clone driver, unlocker, ect. While I noticed slightly better performance in Crysis, you might be better off trying windows 7 now.

That expresscard soundblaster X-FI also works in XP64 (but I didn't test 8 channel with it yet, need to make a cable for it).
