Is it just me or is this VERY unfair?

I bought an np8130 from Xoticpc, I got it and the hard drive was bad. I haven't had it for more than 30 days and I'm in Puerto Rico. I was first told I'd have to pay for shipping, which I could understand if it would have broken down later, but the laptop is shipped damaged and I have to take responsibility for it? Anyway, I fixed the shipping expenses with Justin (great help by the way), and I was supposed to get the rma number and send it. I got the RMA number, and the email says I have to insure the hdd for $139!?!?!?! I mean, I don't think I should have to pay $139 just to have a hdd replaced that was given to me bad since it got here... Anyone else agree with me?

Insuring a package for X amount of dollars doesn't mean you pay that amount. You would only pay a small fraction of the $139.

This doesn't seem right to me. A couple of weeks ago we had a similar situation. One of our customers received his laptop with damaged HDD out of the box. Luckily, we are in the same city, so we took his lappy, tested it and found another hardware problem. We decided to cover the RMA shipping costs and sent the machine back to the distributor (85$ including the insurance).
But 139$ for shipping the HDD? Seems too high. If there's no way of reducing the shipping costs, -forget it. You can get a new HDD from newegg for 60-70$.

Call UPS/Fedex/PRPS (or USPS if you guys use that) and ask for a quote.

You were told to insure the package for $139, not pay $139 for shipping :)

(Insuring it for loss or damage, in case the carrier loses it or damages it)

Insurance is different then shipping charges :S

UPS is around $.35 per one hundred dollars insured and they cover the first $100. So if you ship it UPS you would essentially be paying for $39 worth of insurance.

It's usually like $2-5 dollars to insure packages. Maybe $10 for a high amount. Insurance is really cheap.

I agree if you received an item DOA, then the company that sent it to you should ABSOLUTELY pay for return shipping and all expenses related without hassle. It's a shame you had to talk someone into doing that if that's truly the case.

I provided it in the post above.

We are providing the customer funding for his shipment in and returning it at no charge even though Sager's terms are that shipping is unfortunately not covered for Puerto Rico/Alaska. :)

I did a shipment from Puerto Rico to our Zip code on USPS's calculator for you. So Hopefully this will be somewhat accurate for you.

    Mailing Summary In store online
    Priority Mail® Small Flat Rate Box(4lbs max) $5.20 $5.00
    Insurance (Amount of Insurance $139.00) $2.85 $2.85
    Total $8.05 $7.85

So the Insurance on $139 will only cost you somewhere around $2.85 if you use USPS. And the total shipping amount would only be $8.00 and they give you the box with that. You would just have to supply your own packaging to keep the hard drive secure and safe.

    Hopefully that helps.

glad you got this resloved, and didnt have to pay $139 for the hd lol

last week my friends hd went out on his HP laptop, so i called customer support for him. they wanted $200 for the hard drive, $25 for recovery disk and they wanted him to pay for shipping. i was like bs and told them i could get a larger hd for $60 on newegg and get free OS from my school. the CS rep, and eventually his supervisor, both said "you are an idiot. you dont know what you're talking about, and i assure it wont work.".. then they tried to sell me another laptop lol :p told them right where they could stick that laptop

That seems great, but is it okay to send it through usps? I think that they don't provide tracking numbers and that kinda scares me :S
