And secondly, is it worth it if I can? Do any benefits outweigh the costs involved?
I'm mainly interested in getting the best gaming solution possible within my existing machine.
Hello everyone. I'm in need of help and advice and would appreciate any guidance you can offer.
I have a Clevo P370sm with an I74800Q cpu and a GTX 780m gpu.
After some basic online searching the answer seems to be yes, but it isn't clear to me what the steps involved are. Can I just replace the processors with newer, more powerful versions?
I'm mainly interested in perhaps changing the gpu to a GTX 980m - they seem to be available for about £350 on EBay.
Also, if I've understood correctly the i74940mx is the most powerful compatible cpu available for the P370sm and this is available for about £200.
So £550 for a refresh of my laptop? Is it worth it?
I've taken it apart to clean it and reapply some thermal paste so I'm familiar to an extent with the inner workings of my laptop and I would love to hear from any members who have perhaps upgraded their cards successfully and the steps they took to do so.
Thanks

4940mx is the top CPU but they are terribly binned. The community as a whole had much more success with the 4930mx, get that instead.
IIRC the P370EM works with the MSI 1070 150w card and SLI even works. Unless something has changed to where the next gen (your laptop) cant utilize it. IIRC @ole!!! is the one with the P370EM and may know more than me. I only know what I have seen here and there.sicily428 likes this. -
Thanks for the info. The 4930mx is £170 so my costs are going down.
@ole!!! Put desktop gpus in his P370em? -

NVIDIA dropped the "M" nomenclature from mobile GPUs with the 10XX line since their performance is pretty much on par with their desktop counterparts (MAX-Q not withstanding). So there are MXM/mobile compatible GTX 1070 cards that were produced/available on MSI-branded laptops that would be compatible with your Clevo. -
Oh. Right. I'll look into that too.
Thanks. -

Hmmm - searching around and I found this comment from @Prema on another site:

If he's correct ( and it seems like he's the daddy as his name pops up all over ) then I should be able to simply swap out my 780m for a 980m and be good to go. -
Nope! There are many many infos in the @bennyg guides. check my signature

no, not me. I don't have a P370EM laptop.
but it is rather sad to see 4940mx binned poorly as that was suppose to be the refresh and optimized 4930mx. im guessing intel just thinks that it is mobile and no one will probably ever find out.. lolVistar Shook and sicily428 like this. -
I guess I'll have to do some real due
I guess I'll have to dig deeper until I understand the concept better.
Thanks -

It was the last ever socket mobile extreme too, it was a period where intel seemed to lax their binning.ole!!! likes this. -
If you want you can add my P375SM-A with an MSI GTX 1060.sicily428 likes this.
