It says in the manual that the laptop must be turned off before putting it in the carrying case to prevent overheating, but this is pretty inconvenient. It takes much longer to start after hibernation/shutdown. I left my old laptop in sleep mode all the time, so I'm wondering if it's okay to do so with this one. Maybe Sager is only giving that instruction for legal reasons. Does anyone leave their laptop in sleep mode?

Standby uses power and keeps components on at absolute minimal energy requirement, but on nonetheles...
It`s not good if you`re say, moving it , since you`re shaking all components inside while powered on.
I sugest using Hibernation,it`s slower than standby, but faster than shutdown. perfect compromise...

Sleep mode is still using power to keep the data in RAM. I think the main issue here is whether or not the 5 seconds you saved by not using hibernation is worth the extra cycles of the battery, or the possibility of running your battery down to 0%. Without the battery monitor functioning Sleep mode would drain the battery completely, which can be bad. Hibernation rules and that is what I use.

That's a good point, hibernation doesn't take that long to start up again.

However, when I tell the computer to hibernate, the screen goes black almost immediately but the power remains on for about 20-30 seconds which is kind of annoying to wait. If I close the laptop during this time, will it continue preparing for hibernation or will it halt and go into sleep mode? In XP I had that problem, not sure about Vista.

Hehe, yeah I just decided to not be lazy and try it myself. It works, so I'm happy. I'll just use hibernation instead of sleep mode then.

Yea,in Vista there`s no progress bar showing when hibernation is complete, like in XP.
    But it works,nonetheless.

5 seconds?! Sleep takes about 3-4 seconds and hibernate takes about a minute with 4 Gb RAM. I prefer just shutting my system down, as it only takes 15 seconds for shutdown and 1:30 for complete boot and startup execution... plus restarting gives you a nice clean slate unlike hibernate...

Even if your computer continues with the hibernation process when the lid is closed I wouldn't recommend moving it
until the hibernation process is completely finished because your laptop is using your hd a lot during hibernation.
If you move it you could cause a head crash and subsequently have a dead hd.
That actually happens to more people than you might think.

^ I think you meant standby.
While on hibernation,RAM state is saved to disk and system is fully shutdown.

he is talking about entering hibernation, while the comp is writing the ram to the hdd, in vista the screen goes black and you just have to wait without the progress bar xp gives you
