I was originally planning to get a Clevo without an OS installed since I could probably get copy for cheaper. However I'm starting to hear these horror stories of laptops arriving DOA, because the OS wasn't installed.

Is it worth getting Windows installed by the reseller to avoid as many problems as possible?

Resellers generally will test the machine with windows before sending out as far as I'm aware. Same if you order with no hdd/ssd, they will test with one of theirs, and remove it before shipping.

This, I know for a fact that Malibal, Mythlogic, and Xotic all test their machines with their own components/OS if you choose not to order a particular piece of hardware(like HDD or RAM) or OS.

If you plan on ordering from someone else, I would send them a PM here or an email and see what they have to say.

depends how much cheaper you could get, if it is just something around $10, I could just let them do it

I agree. There is a price for convenience.

Unless you already have a copy of Windows, it's often cheaper to just order it with the machine because it's cheaper than full retail pricing for the operating system. You can get system builder copies for roughly the same price retailers sell for, but that's up to you. Also, regardless of whether you order with an OS or not- the system is fully tested with a working operating system, then swapped back for your blank drive.
