Is that correct that some games only use the 1st and 2nd core and not the 3rd or 4th ?
meaning that it is better for games if I get a 3 gig core 2 duo over a 2.5 gig quad ?
is this correct ?

Some games yes, but your OS will benefit from a quad, and it future proofs your rig.

and that all games that uses multi core never touch the 3rd or 4th ???

Here are some games that use all 4 cores
Lost Planet/ Devil May Cry 4 - same engines
All Unreal3 engine games
MS Flight Sim X
Supreme Commander
Company of Heroes
Latest Source Games - with multithread switch activated
BloodRayne2 - with Walterman's patch
World in Conflict
Crysis (I think)

It is some glitch in the programming. Anyway windows should assign the programs to run on any of the two combination of 2 cores (core0 and core 1) or (core 2 and core 3). I guess the program always asks to use core 0 and core 1 instead of asking just for 2 cores. Prabbly a reminiscence from the beginning when there were only dual cores around. Also on the Intel quads this way it will ensure that it uses 2 cores that are together and have a common L2 cache, otherwise it will be slower. it seems that the windows programmers catch up very slow with technology. On linux we have support for big clusters and parallel programming for more than a decade.
