I'm completely lost by the numbering schemes these days. what is ati launching the HD3870 to compete with? the gtx, the gt, the gts, the 9600gt?

I was just thinking, i know the price on the 860tu is the cheapest with the 3870 but then i remember also that ati slashed their prices so i dont want to just use the price as an indicator.

basically i dont want to buy the laptop now, spend $200 on the 9800gt and find out at the end of august that i could have just gotten the ati card and had equal or better performance.

As far as 3dmark is concerned, it scores 9200 with a T7700 while the 9800M GT/8800M GTX scores 9200 with a X9000. So I'd say it's pretty much near the 9800M GT. If you don't have unlimited budget, I think it's the best buy.

no, its not competition for the 9800m GTX. it may be a bit higher than the 9800m GTS, but radeon cards have a tendancy to perform less in real life than their 3dmarks might suggest.

Its likely between the 9800GTS and the 9800GT, probably closer to the GTS though.

the 9800m GTX could may very well be the 40% more performance than the 8800m GTX as promised. so no

the 3870x2 and 3850x2 is what u really should be comparing to the 9800m GTX... mabye the ATI will win that bout. esp seeing as in say the new Maingear and OZC notebooks there is space for a single 9800m GTX or a 3870x2.. heat wize i guess they may be about the same?

^^^ man they show the 9800gt bumping out the 8800gtx in 3dmark06... id like to see the system specs on what they tested with... 9143 for the 8800gtx and 9762 for the 9800gt,

and they are showing scores for the 9800gtx also...10138!! if they are right on that site with their testing the 9800gtx will stomp the 8800gtx.. and they even have results for the 3850x2???? is that even out for testing yet??

According to the information that the Mobility ATI 3870 may have the same specs as the ATI 3850 Desktop (compare specs on NBC and here)
    - and if you assume that the 9800m GT has the same specs as the Desktop 8800GTS you might cmpare these 2 ( the 8800 GTS and the ATI 3850) here (sorry, it's a german site I posted in the Notebookcheck forums too). As you see it both are almost equal and the mobile ATI 3870 would perform as good as the 9800m GT.

Also Eurocom Notebooks has the m860TU with ATI about 150€ (or 180$ cheaper (!) than the ones with Nvidia 9800m GT.

The 9800M GT score (9762) was achieved with a Q6600 (apparently?). Another similar score (96xx) was done with a X9100 by Justin. Both very high-end processors.

The HD3870 benchmark (9200), well, we don't even know if it's accurate, (it was supplied by ATI afaik), but it says it was done with a T7700. So you've got to assume it would bench much higher with something like a X9100.

So really, its too early to say how the mobility 3870 compares. Wait for some gaming benchmarks and we will see if it is a good card in terms of performance/price.
