I'm considering getting a new laptop and the Sager NP8130 seems like it's really popular and a good bang for the buck. However, I've always heard that computers are typically "outdated" about two years after they're released and the Sager NP8130 is about a year old; what I'm wondering is whether I should continue looking at the NP8130 or if I should wait until a newer model comes out (whenever that may be?)?

The Sager NP8130 was originally release in January but Sager models are different the other brands. They keep the model numbers but will upgrade the hardware in them to keep the computer current. For example when it was first released it had the GTX 460M gpu in it but now has the 560M.

You really dont see Sager change their models until there are new chipset release's which can be a year or two.

If you order a NP8130 you'll still be getting some of the newest technology. To get latest and greatest the NP8150 will give you those options

the only thing that would be "outdated" in 2 years would be the GPU. The 560M GTX can handle current games, but can definitely see it struggle 2 years down the road.

the CPU (i7 2720QM) in my 8130 is hardly dated. neither is the GPU.

Outdated by what standard? It's got the newest 5xx series GPU from Nvidia that it can support (the 560m) without having to bump to the P150Hm. It supports all the most current Sandy Bridge CPU's as well. (This is in addition to 1080p screen, USB 3.0, etc which are still rather new for mainstream laptops).

As Hutsady said, Clevo based models aren't "outdated" until a new model supersedes it. Until then, they continue to update them with newer GPU's/CPU's to stay current. Typically new models only come out when there's a drastic change to the chipset anyway.

Considering my love for my laptop and the amount of effort I have put into helping people make informed decisions when it comes to buying Sager products....

I find it very hard not to take this thread as a personal insult or attack

But....everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions.

Mine is, in answer to the OP's question, no.

    Outdated? [IMG]
I got my 8130 in March, it's the GTX 460M version, the shipping version with GTX 560M now and theres apparently even a CPU update on the way (If the last bios update was any indication)

By this "outdated" logic no laptop would be worth buying, if a few months (which the machine has even been updated in mind you) is obsolescence then whats the point of buying anything?

I find it hard to call the latest and greatest obsolete when its... still the latest and greatest, saying in won't be in 2 years (I guess over a year and a half technically by your statement) isn't really cogent basis for buying decisions now.

Everything gets updated eventually, it happens, that foreseeable concept doesn't make what is current top end now any less top end NOW.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that..

If I purchased this laptop, I would get the i7 2630QM, since it's so much cheaper. Is the processor something that can be upgraded in the future?

A personal insult or attack? Uh, no.. It was a question asked out of ignorance. I'm happy with the answer, by the way!

Do you have any more information on when the CPU might be upgraded?

From what I can gather it'll just be higher clocked choices, you'll likely still see the same choices being offered and these new CPU's in addition, I could be wrong but that seems the most likely, as for me I'm very content with my 2720QM.

Yep, you can upgrade it without any issue to the higher end sandy bridge parts (2720, 2820, 2920xm) with just a simple swap.

As for the next upgrade- in terms of architecture, Ivy Bridge is the successor to the current Sandy Bridge and it's supposedly being released around the beginning of next year. When it will make it to laptops on the market after that is unclear (at least until there's a firm launch date of the new lineup)

As mentioned this model began shipping the latter part of January of this year. The current i7 CPU offerings are very capable for the foreseeable future as far a applications and such.

It will be quite some time before it is in any way "outdated". :)

The 8130 was just upgraded a month ago with a new GPU. It's technology when released was a year AHEAD of mainstream laptops.

Sager keeps the model numbers and upgrades the internals

Even my Core 2 Quad still performs very well, and that is a CPU that's over two years old. So, yes, the current i7 offerings will be still be powerful for a good amount of time.

basically the laptop isnt outdated, as they try to put the newest tech in the old case. so the only thing u should look for is ivy bridge and maxwell or amd 7000m, but those wont be until next year.
