I currently have an AMD Radeon HD 6990M card, but I need a new GPU and the only one I can afford is the GTX 675M. I just need to know if it's compatible with my system. Also, any tips about upgrading / switching out the GPU's are welcome. How challenging is the process?

Is your current card broken? It would be more of a side-grade in performance. Your next step up would be the 7970m/675mx/680m and I only know out of that list the 7970m with a modded bios to work for sure

Yea I don't think it's really worth getting a 675m as an "upgrade" as it is only a little bit faster than your 6990m. :(

My card is currently dying and this is all I can afford. I know it isn't an upgrade, but it beats shelling out for a new system. I've checked benchmarks, and the performance seems to be almost the same as mine. I just need to know if the 675M is compatible with my system.

The GTX 675M is the same exact card as the GTX 580M, so my first feeling is that there shouldn't be any issue with it booting properly.

But no one here has actually taken a 675M flashed 580M and installed it in an HM, so who can say 100%? You're going to be the guinea pig either way we slice it.

Man this sucks. I wish there were a way to know for sure, I don't want to spend $575 dollars on something that won't even work with my machine!

The 675m will work, the 675mx will not

    myth to the rescue :)

@OP: id still rather consider a 7970m in ur case, its just 480 bucks and thus even cheaper than the 675m. just go ahead and check for urself at rjtech.com :)

I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm pretty apprehensive about getting another AMD card now with all the trouble my 6990M has given me. Seeing as I'm short on funds though, and the 7970M is cheaper, how is the performance of the 7970M compared to the 6990M and the 675M? I'm also assuming that the 7970M is compatible with my P150HM system?

7970M in the non enduro system (yours) is at a similar level to the 680M and at about 10-15% slower than the desktop 7870.

No. My 6990M died recently and I bought a 7990M. I'm using the same power supply.

Granted, it's only been a week but I haven't had any issues with it. Heck, even the HDMI works, although no one can figure out why yet...

Why wouldn't the HDMI work? Also, thanks for clearing that up for me. How did you find out that your 6990M died?

You HDMI works because you have the HM which doesnt use an integrated GPU. The EM model do so people are running into issues there.

It's a known issue that the HDMI does not work when the 7970M is placed in the HM series, although my case clearly shows otherwise. The DVI works fine.

My 6990M would not output to the laptop LCD. When connected to an external monitor via HDMI, it would only go up to 1440x1050 even though it used to do 1920x1080 just fine. Installing any ATI driver would cause BSOD or zero output. I took a gamble and replaced the GPU. Now everything is back to normal.

Oh, am I mistaken? I thought people upgrading to 7970M in the HM series lacked HDMI . The Enduro utilization is another issue for people with EM series.

It's possible I'm wrong, wouldn't be the first time, however since yours is working it sounds right.

Iirc hdmi works but does not give audio due to a hdcp issue.

My communications with my P150HM reseller, XoticPC, seem to indicate so.

"I asked about the upgraded cards for you, Sager says that the 7970M can be installed, but the HDMI will not work, and the 680M is not compatible. "

If you look around the forum, a couple people have brought this up. Most think it's a software issue.

I bought my card from eBay (on the listing, it stated "HDMI out does NOT work on the P150HM/P151HM series with this upgrade. DVI will work however."). After I installed, HDMI, video and audio, works fine. I even posted a video to prove it. Someone flashed the BIOS that came with my card but that did not solve the issue for him .

    ^ That's true, except Xotic's claim that 680m won't work in HM.

Did you check with them other possible subtle differences like monitor make?

? 680m's work just fine in HM series laptops, you'll need some customized drivers (laptopvideo2go.com) but besides that works fine.

To be fair, Xotic was just passing along what Sager said.
