Is the power supply the culprit of my problem?

Hi it has been awhile since I last posted here usually when I am researching a upgrade laptop this is the place I come.

    So I have a np8760 bought it almost 3 years ago. 920xm ATI 5870m

Never had a problem with it really except my battery stopped being read by windows it seems. The laptop didn't get any use for about a year since I deployed to Iraq. I have had about 2 times where it would shut off I would open it up and do a blow out with compressed air remove the fans and blow vents out.

So last saturday I was gaming Guild Wars 2 and it cut off black screen complete shutdown. So I thought I would do the usual and clean it out which I did canned air blow vents like normal etc. I plug it back up and same issue it shut down during start up. So I did same again thought maybe I left some thing in there and used canned air again. Same thing I made it through bootup and logged in started guild wars 2 back up and shut down after a little while.

So I called xoticpc which is the place I purchased it from talked to the guy and he said that it could be a psu problem to give that a try by getting a new one before deciding to send it in or not.

So I have ordered a new one I didn't touch the computer for about 2 days since I ordered the new psu. I started it up and it cut off after 2 secs if that. So I figured open it up again more canned air I removed the ram and looked at it blew around that area. Started it up got to logged in surfed for about 5 minutes and it did the same.

The thing I think is different this time than the others is that the power supply led light will shut off. I don't remember this happening before. Today for instance when i first tried it after it not being plugged up for 2 days and it cut off after 2 secs the led went off on th psu and didn't come back on for 15 minutes this was after I unplugged it and plugged it back up it still didnt come on at all. It just kinda came on randomly.

So I was wondering what do you guys think does it sound like it is time to replace the power supply unit and that could be the problem?

I posted the same in the owners lounge but since I know its a older model I don't know how often that lounge gets looked at really.

Its not an unreasonable stab at the problem, especially with the led going off. Battery does not work at all? If it ran ok on that it would confirm the psu problem.

I wish I could test on battery but unfortunately the battery isn't being recognized by windows at all. It doesn't hold a charge at all either. I don't have the battery swelling problem though which is kind of strange

Well let us know if the new charger fixes your issue, maybe a new AC adapter helps with the battery too?

    Thanks I will do.

After looking at the batter in the laptop a bit more it is indeed swelled but its not very noticeable that is why windows hasnt been reading it. I thought it was just a dead batter.

So with a slight pressure on the middle the battery is read by the computer well the led icon lights up on front of the laptop to indicate its charging.

So I plugged up the laptop to the suspected ac adapter and gave a little pressure to see if I can get the battery some juice and to at least turn it on and see if it will cut off on battery power.

The ac adapter starts to charge the battery for a few seconds and then the led on the ac adapter cuts off this is without trying to turn the laptop on at all.

I am not a computer expert at all but it kind of gives me more hope that it is indeed the ac adapter that is the problem because I really am not enjoying my little netbook i am on at the moment.

try and avoid using that defective psu until u get the new one. i know it might be a tad over-zealous but theres always a risk of shooting down ur whole system if the psu is messed up.
