I've pretty much settled on the NP5750 as my college notebook-however, I didn't know until tonight that this beast weighed 9.4 pounds. While I love the performance and price point that this machine offers, I'm also concerned that carrying the computer to and from class-along with a full load of music literature-will have me popping a pair of pain pills every night to silence my shoulders and back. I will also be traveling by air every now and again, and I fear that moving through airports, as well as on-plane use, will be somewhat difficult.
I just bought a Timbuk2 Pro Series large messenger bag with a computer like this in mind, but even with the bag's innovative strap system, I'm not sure I'll be able to handle the weight.

Do any of you 5750/60 owners regularly transport your laptops? Do you feel that the computer's weight makes it an intolerable burden? Any input you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

The base of the notebook is 9.4lbs, throw in the weight of the back, charger, cables and accessories plus a few books, mp3 player and cds, maybe a bottle of water, you're seeing in excess of 12-13+lbs. That, my friend, is some serious mule work you'll be doing. I'm sure you're able to but the question is do you want to. Well... do you?

This is the Sager 5760 put next to the Dell Inspirion.
This Dell allready is large laptop, but this thing is massive. It boils down to what you want a laptop for? If you want something portable but powerful which can make the trip from home to college and back with realitve ease- then this laptop is perfect. However, if you're looking to take notes on this daily, then it becomes kind of a hassle. It's possible as jujube says, but it depends on what you want from your laptop. This thing is indeed powerful, but it's not something you're going to want to use writing papers under a tree on campus everyday if you catch my drift. -

I have carried around 17" notebooks befor, and didn't find the weight to be the issue, but rather the bulk of them. As long as you have an appropriate bag to transport them in, it shouldn't be too bad.
If you want to find out whether or not you can handle the weight, get 9.4 pounds of books and put them in the bag, carry it around for a day. -

you won't get on-plane with a 17" in coach

Thanks for the thoughts. Since this machine will basically be my "power" computer (as I can't afford to have a desktop and notebook at the same time), I think that I would be willing/able to deal with the bulk as a tradeoff for its performance potential.
-
What about getting a loaded 15.4" notebook (like the HEL80 or Z96J) for travel, then hook it up to a 19" monitor when you're home?
-
The reason why I like the Sager so much is that it blends all of the elements I require better than pretty much any other offering on the market-I could buy it and all of my needs for computing would be met or exceeded. My concern was that I wouldn't be easily able to take it anywhere other than my dorm room. -

Anywhere but coach on a plane will be fine

I have an e1705 and I am in school. I have decent backpack for hauling it around in so that it's reasonably comfortable, but I certainly wouldn't ever think about taking the computer with me daily. It's fine for night trips to the library or finding a quite corner on campus to work in, but it's a beast of a machine and lighter than yours. I can guarentee you won't be carying that thing along all day every day. Not even so much because of the wieght, but the pure girth of the notebook. A notebook that big is simply unwieldy and a pain to take out/put away.

I actually just brought my laptop w/ me at my vacation last week and it was not a problem using it in the plane and also carrying it around.
I even let my son watch movies on it on the coach tray.
I usually carry my laptop from home to work and will be carrying it from home to school to work and back this coming september.
In short:
Weight and size of the 5760 is not a problem.
Just make sure you get a decent bag for it that will be comfortable for you in the long run and also has enough padding/protection for it. -
Forget about taking any laptop on a plane right now.... lol. For me my 9400 isnt that bad, as long as you use a nice bag you will be all well and good.

Thanks for the input, guys!

Really? 9.4lbs? Wow
I swear there was a discussion about it being around 7.5lbs
I was waay off.

From powernotebooks specification page for the 5760
Size and Weight
15.6" x 11.5" x 1~1.8"
9.4 Pounds fully loaded including Battery
As a comparison.. the other desktop replacement lappy that you see the most is the 9750-
Size and Weight
11.75" x 15.5" x 1.95"
12.5 lb. including battery
It weighs over 3 pounds (33%) more than the 5760. -
but it's more sexy and powerful. Booyah. <_<
-
Powerful, maybe... Sexy? not IMO. the 9750 is a brick. it's square with square corners and one color. The 5750/5760 is all sleek and curvy and gold and metal and shiny!
to each his own. -
I find power to be more sexy than looks. <_<
-
Hmm good point.
Is the weight of the 5750 a mobility issue?
