    Is there a Six-Core i7 compatible with Prostar D900F/D9F?

    Hi everyone,

I've got a Prostar D900F with BIOS (Phoenix SecureCore) revision 1.00.02aB. Currently I have a i7-950 3.06GHz (Quad Core) processor installed, and I would really like to swap it with the i7-990x Extreme 3.46GHz (Six-Core), i7-980X or i7-970. Is it? And would I have to update the BIOS?

Would really appreciate some help!

    The 6-cores are supported already.

I even have a screenshot, of the 980x running in the D900F:

 Which six-cores are supported? I've searched on these forums for a while now, only found posts about 980x maybe being supported, not the 990x.

Although none of the posts I found told me what BIOS is compatible with the 980x, nor if modifications to the fans/cooling or anything else is needed. Only found one guide that showed how to replace it, though the last step was a photo of it not working hehe

--Forgot to mention that I have also emailed both Prostar and Clevo, and their responses were it's not supported. Prostar said it's not supported and the system would not handle it. Clevo said I should look in the manual on page C-2 specifications, that it would tell me support is only up to i7-965 :(

the 微代碼(dont know in english...) of 980x and 990x are the same
if your bios version supports 980x, then very big chance support 990x
like many desktop mobo can run 990x with the old bios which first update to support 980x
or just update to latest bios

微代码=Microcode or the little barcode numbers attached to each CPU.

Kevin's screenshot already proves that the 980x works, despite official assurances to the contrary. If DGDXGDG is right, then the other higher-clocked processor should also be supported in theory.

Thank you so much for the replies guys!!! Been clueless for days now searching for a solution, while all I had to do was register and ask here :)

I don't mind going with the 980x instead of 990x. It's still a great update from my Quad-Core 3.06GHz, and I rather be sure it will actually work.

But, can anyone tell me if the newer BIOS update is really needed for it to work? I don't like the sound of it getting bricked if the updating goes wrong :p. Although I suppose it's a chance worth taking...

Also what else is needed to replace the processor? Do I just have to replace the CPU itself, or would I need to replace/add a cooler or apply Arctic Silver 5 or something?

The screenshot I posted was from before the machine had launched. That means the 980x was supported from the very first BIOS.

Sorry to bump this, but I'm still a bit worried about Mutant_Tractor's try, if it was because of old unsupported BIOS? Or something else. $1.000 for the 980x is a bit much for me to risk. Maybe I shouldn't attempt to upgrade :(

Wow, didn't know about the i7 995x! But there is no way it will work with the D900F :S. I mean, i7 990x is not confirmed to work, so how can i7 995x be compatible?

I'm interested in knowing that as well :p But if 990x is not compatible with my laptop, then I doubt it will be.
