Hi all
I think my W230sd heat pipes have failed
The cpu is getting very hot, reaching 99 degrees and the laptop is restarting.
I have repasted the cpu and it is only a pentium.
Before this cpu there was a 4700mq in the laptop which was getting very hot and may have damaged something.
The fan is working fine but the air coming out of it is only warm.
Could this be caused by something else ?
And if not, is there any place to buy the heatpipes and heat sink assembly ?
Thank you.

Hitting 99C is a cooling problem for sure. When I was paste testing I ran across one that worked well for about 4 days and then started producing blistering temps out of nowhere. I replaced the paste again with another brand and the issue went away.
The pipes might be fine but, there might be an air gap between things that needs to be resolved or like in my case a different paste to be used. If you inspected the heat sink and found visible issues with it and do need to replace it your best options are ebay / aliexpress. These HS's run anywhere from $50 - $100 for both CPU/GPU + fans. -
Thanks tech junky
The heatpipes near the cpu get very hot all the way till near the fans, but the last part of the heatpipe is not hot, so I think the cpu heat pipe is not working properly. -
The farther from the source the cooler it should be. It's a radiator w/o the fluid.
I would start with a different paste and see if it resolves and if it's still an issue go ahead with the HS replacement. -

If a pipe fails the whole thing is usually cold. The end of the heatpipes should be the same temperature as the fins themselves basically.

It is a pentium 3550m that is getting very hot and the laptop is restarting.
Could it be bad contact between the heat sink and the cpu ?
But the heatpipes near the cpu are getting very hot.
Edit: and also to add, the air from the fan is not hot even when the cpu and the heatpipes are very hot. -
Do you have any airflow when the fans are running? I know when I was inside my machine doing some stuff I noticed some vent build up and took a can of air to them and blew out chunks of stuff that had been clogging things up a bit. Didn't make much of a difference but, airflow is better w/o the restriction and the fans cycle faster on/off.
Can you open the machine and take some pics of the situation? -
I opened the laptop cover and there are no visible problems.
There is air coming from the vent but it is lukewarm at best.
Now the laptop is restarting even though the cpu is not very hot, only reaching about 75 degrees Celsius before the laptop restarts.
I don’t know if there is a problem with the cpu or other parts of the laptop caused by the overheating of the cpu, or if the pch is overheating because I cannot see it’s temperature, or there is any other problem.
Thanks for the help. -
https://www.hwinfo.com/download/ -- this will show you all temps / when it opens up click on SENSORS to open the panel that provides live update info for each sensor.
If the CPU is only hitting 75C that shouldn't be causing a reboot by itself. GPU overheating might be the issue or something else. Check event viewer for the logs to indicate where the issue may lie. -
I am already using hwinfo, albeit an older version, and it does not show PCH temperature.
The GPU is only reaching about 50 degree C.
And event viewer is not showing anything other than sudden shutdown. -

There is a chance one of the VRMs on the CPU is having issues.

In place that's very difficult, a thermal image would help.

Event viewer is kind of remedial when it comes to finding things.
I had an issue with spontaneous reboots and it kept saying power kernel or something along those lines. I thought maybe it was the new power brick i started using recently and it turned out to be a drive issue from Intel causing the fault / reboots. I couldn't figure it out until I switched to Linux for a couple of days and didn't have the reboot issue anymore.
GPU @ 50C seems to be about the idle temp I see as well on my machine.
CPU @ 75C or less indicates a minor load keeping it warm but not critical
- When I was testing out different pastes I had one fail and the temps @ idle shot up to 99-102C and didn't have reboots but, didn't like those temps and ordered some new paste that arrived the next day and got things under control again.
Here's the PCH temp on my server
I use a module in linux "sensors" to monitor things and keep an eye on it in a live CLI watch command.( watch "sensors")
Might be a good idea to grab Ubuntu liveCD and run that for awhile and see what kind of temps you're actually getting in real time. No need to install the OS as it will run in RAM just fine. Maybe there's something in Windows fouling things up that isn't quite apparent.
Here's a wider snapshot of the CPU cores as well.
So, the PCH runs a little hotter than the surrounding items but, there's no impact from it that I've seen.sharkam52 likes this. -

PCH temps will always be a bit higher. They handle a lot of I/O and are made using a larger manufacturing process.
Is there anywhere to buy W230sd heat pipes ?
