Hi, just last week, my 9150 Special Edition arrived & it has been great to me. While running various cpu burn in software, the temp never rised higher than low 70s while hearing the fan turn on. The 680m never went higher than high 70s C while hearing the fan turn on during 3DMark 11, Vantage & Kombustor testing.
But out of the blue one day while watching streamed anime via Chrome, the 680m hit 125C & I didn't realize it until I was about to power down the system for the night. During the whole time I never once heard the fan go on hence the reason why I never bothered to check the 680m temp. Plus, I set NV control panel for Chrome to use the iGPU. As soon as I noticed the high temp, I automatically hit FN+1 to get the fans started. I did let the temp go down to low 40s C before running 3DMark 11 & Vantage to see if I would get any failures & to test if the fan would go on or not. None of the test failed & I could hear the fan go on during testing.
The next day while I had Chrome opened but the system was idle while the screen was off, I went to use the laptop & the 680m temp showed 99C. I automatically hit FN+1 to get the fan running again. As soon as the temp went down & after a few mins to let it cool off. I Went back to do 3DMark 11, Vantage & Kombustor to test the temp & if the fan would go on. 3DMark passed with flying colors & results were higher after each test. The fans did go on during 3DMark & Kombustor GPU burn-in testing.
Just a few mins ago before writing this thread, the 680m temp hit 99C again. I'm using MSIBurner to monitor the 680m temp. I'm running Kombustor as we speak & the temp never gets higher than high 70s C & I can hear the fan running.
Each time the temp skyrocketed, I used my fingers to see if the GPU area on the back of the laptop was hot & yes it was very hot to make sure MSIBurner was not misleading me with bad temps.
I'm currently lost for words & been trying to replicate the issue but haven't had znysuccess for the past two days. The high 680m temp would just happen randomly. Should I be concerned & should I be considering doing a RMA?
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Those temps could be wrong. If it was at 125C the computer should have shut itslef off at 104C with the built in thermal protection. Get HWMonitor to see if its showing the same temps.

also try nvidia inspector and core temps in my signature below. i get mid to high 90c cpu temps but never the gpu. as Hutsady said it would of turned off at 104-105c to protect the hardware.

Speaking of NvidiaInspector, I get this error msg when running it.

Which Seller did you buy ur Laptop from ?

if you used the link in my sig for nvidia inspector it looks like that not compatable with windows 8 so try this one NVIDIA Inspector Download version 1.9.6.9

You can also poke around your BIOS setup screen, in the Main section. That should show you temperature readings more accurately than GUI based software, albeit some useful tools and a nicer interface.

Thanks for your help fellas -

FYI, SAGER when testing the temps before shipping NEW machines, especially on NVIDIA GPU's, test with HWINFO64...

Hey all
I want to get the NP 9150
wondering if there are any new Graphic cards coming up
is it worth waiting ?
Thanks -
thanks to everyone in this thread for helping me. All is well now, after uninstalling MSIBurner & using HWMonitor & RealTemp to measure my temps, I don't see a spike in GPU temp anymore. Not sure why MSIBurner would be showing a false temp that freaked me out.
I'm really liking this laptop but my only gripes are the keyboard, weight, power supply. Let me say that I've been using MacBook Pro's as a home laptop for the past 6 years so I'm comparing to that. As for the keyboard, I personally don't see a need for a full sized KB on a 15" laptop. I just prefer the regular sized KB. If I need a numpad then I can get a USB KB with a numpad. I can understand having a full sized KB on a 17" but not on a 15". The 9150 isn't really that heavy but compared to a MBP, it is. But, you can't have power & portability so it's a fair trade. I just wished it was a little thinner & lighter. As for the power supply, wish they can make a smaller sized one that produces as much needed power to power up the 9150. It adds up when you have it with the laptop in a backpack on the go. To each their own..
All in all, this laptop rocks so much more than my MBP, I can finally play games at ultra settings. Once again, thanks for everyone helping me out in this thread. And thanks again in selling me an awesome laptop, Larry!

Glad you're enjoying it man. Trust me when I say it's the best performance you can possibly get in such a small package. My M17x is much larger and heavier (around 10 lbs lol) than my NP9150 was, though it has a thinner psu. My dad has a MBP and I can imagine how it would be a shock to go from that to the Sager, but I think Clevo did a great job of keeping it light and compact despite the powerful hardware and cooling.

My next project is to get a 256gb mSATA for linux & 256gb SSD for Windows. LOL -

The ssd's are going to be a nice upgrade. You'll get to keep your hdd, too. Wish I had thought of that instead of going for a 256gb main ssd, a 128gb secondary ssd, then sticking my 750gb hdd in an enclosure lol. Needlessly complicated -
Yeah, I can't wait to get the SSD's. I know the feeling, I'll probably put my 750gb HDD in the optical bay down the road also for 2 SSD & the 750GB as storage, LOL. -

Is this normal for a new 9150 SE model?
