So lets assume after upgrading the GPU the notebook beeps and puts on a lightshow, you know, the typical behaviour when it can't read the sensors/fan RPM what could be the reason of this if it worked previously on a different brand of notebook, lets say in this case MSI. Also we are going to assume everything is connected properly.
- wrong vBios?
- wrong BIOS?
- gSync graphicscard on non gsync notebook?
etc.
I would be interested some answers, I currently have a friend who upgraded and has issues with his notebook. In his case my guess is it's because he got a gsync card and tries to run it in a non gsync notebook.
Since everything ran perfectly for me everytime I upgraded an MXM card I can't really relate to these kind of issues and lack the knowledge of troubleshooting these things.
Also I was wondering about this:
When the card is completely incompatible or broken, the notebook either won't get anything on the screen or it will simply beep like mad the moment you start it, but what if you get into windows and it starts beeping after windows started, this is probably caused by vBios issues or the fact that you have a card that runs g-sync on a non g-sync notebook, right?

What machine (model bios etc) , what exact card (PCB revision and vbios version)?
-
He can't check vBios an such due to the beeping. It also turns off after a little while (maybe a minute)
His Bios also says Unknown but I guess that's normal. My P157SM also says unknown and it still works flawlessly.
EDIT:
nvm he actually was able to read the VBIOS from the sticker 1 of the the cards:
N16E-GX V2.1 8Q 6-77-P15SL-DA2-1
VB: 84.04.22.00.10 (did confirm that this is a Clevo Vbios)
So this is my theory tell me if I'm right or not.
- Card doesn't beep the moment he presses the start button, meaning it should sit properly and it can read the sensors.
- Card has Clevo Vbios so that should work as well.
So that means he has to upgrade bios.Last edited by a moderator: Mar 19, 2017 -

Yes try updating to the latest BIOS. Be careful to get the right one.

I'll get prema BIOS for him, that way I know it will run GTX 980m IF that's the issue. If it still doesn't work I know there has to be another issue. But it's still weird, considering that it would boot up until Windows and first after a couple of seconds it would start bieping. Doesn't incomptabile BIOS normally mean that he shouldn't even be able to see something on the Screen? Or could a system still start up but cause these problems?
The weird part is, the other card lets him boot and all, but his notebook would freeze completely after using it for a bit or start a game. Basicially be different issues per card, something really seems weird here. -

Welcome to the world of MXM cards
Checking the card has the right vbios after that.
