My order for an NP5793 is placed at XoticPC. Glad to be a member of the club.
Unfortunately, I have little to offer and I like to ask a lot of questions.
Yay!

Well, that`s what the forums are for.
Congrats on the purchase. -

I'll try to answer your questions, but I'm more of a comic foil; especially when I start posting drunk.

NP5793 - WSXGA+, T9300, 4 GB RAM, nVidia 8800m GTX, 320 GB HDD.
I ordered without OS because I have a copy of XP at home already. Will probably go to Vista 64 in a year or so.
I am such a loser, I already made my AHCI supported XP disc, and my laptop is still probably 2 weeks away.
Now, suppose it's time to get my usb stick rigged up to upgrade the bios and put that Matrix/Sager boot screen on. ( Thanks zfactor) -
ooohhhhhhhh terminator! Sweet.

What's done?

Any special reason you're sticking to XP 32-bit? So ya know, Vista x64 runs very nicely on these laptops, and the documentation it comes with assumes that's what you'll be running. The driver disc has all Vista x64 drivers.
Unless you have some specific app that absolutely requires XP 32-bit, reconsider your decision. Vista is not *quite* as bad as the FUDsters say. -
I have used Vista before, and I am not a huge fan, but I didn't think it was terrible either. Certainly on a low spec laptop I would avoid it like the plague. This one, I am sure would handle it, but really I just prefer XP. I hate the way they dumbed down vista, and added extra steps in order to get to the windows where you can do stuff. It's like they added a wizard inline with every configuration window. More annoying than anything.
I would prefer to get pushed out of XP, then jump, and I already have a copy of XP, so there is no cost involved.
I assumed all the XP drivers would be included as well, since XP is listed as an OEM option.
Was I wrong to assume? -
You can get the latest XP drivers from the Sager, Clevo, etc.. sites as well.
Remember to use SP3 when you load up your XP.
Or you can do what I did, and just slipstream SP3 (using nLite) into your version of XP, so that it would be included during you fresh install. -
It'll also be virus-fodder two years earlier than XP (home or pro) unless you get the business version.

I hesitated on Vista for a while, but after on and off usage on an older Dell laptop I decided to run it full-time on my Sager and it's doing great.
I think more than Vista x64 being a decent OS to run on the Sager 5793, is that XP 32-bit is *not* the way to go on a brand new high-performance gaming laptop. Not only do you lose RAM (approx. half a gig) due to 32-bit OS limitations, but you miss out on the potential of 64-bit apps and games. Heck if you're so anti-Vista at least consider XP64. I couldn't find a driver for the STK1135 webcam but everything else worked and worked well.
Limiting these new processors to 32-bit OS's seems so primitive. I haven't run XP32 on anything but virtual machines in almost 18 months. -
currently have the sager NP9262 with vista ultimate 64bit with no issues. Loving it. The only complaint I have is that I was told it will have all the microsoft updates installed, NOT. 41 updates later all is fine.
I would really recommend having them install a OS, in my Opinion. -
I haven't seen any benchmarks for showing increased processor performance in a 64 bit environment vs. 32. Do you have any links? Maybe I will have a look to see how much of a limitation it is. -
To summarize as succinctly as I can: other than the business editions of _Vista, no version of _Vista, or any support packs thereto, will get any support - including security updates - from Microsoft after April 10, 2012.
Translated, that means that, as of April 11, 2012, anyone with _Vista installed who does not have the business edition or the enterprise edition will be at the mercy of any virus, worm, trojan, or other malware that comes along, and Microsoft won't lift a finger to prevent it from wreaking havoc on your system if you're exposed to it.
Now, for comparison's sake, please review this webpage.
To summarize: every version of Windows_XP - Home, Media Center 02, 04, and 05, Tablet PC, Tablet PC 05, and Professional - will receive Extended Support until April 8, 2014.
Translated, that means that a computer running any of those XP versions will be protected (to the extent possible from MS) from malware until April 8, 2014.
Now, just in case anyone's wondering why the difference in treatment between consumer and business versions for _Vista but not XP, well, because Microsoft was so late in delivering _Vista, they caved to substantial consumer complaints and decided to "extend" Extended Support to the home editions of XP to the same extent as XP Pro had that support. Here's the Microsoft press release.
What that means is, don't expect them to do the same thing again for _Vista - my spin on it, though, is that, if it gets to the same point with _Vista, i.e., Win7 is extremely overdue, Microsoft will have effectively consigned itself to the dustbin of history, because by that time, a substantial number of their business users, who are their bread-and-butter, will most likely have moved on to some sort of linux-based proprietary system. Basically, hitting the announced Win7 release date, with a product that is qualitatively better than XP or _Vista, is make or break for Microsoft at this point, as far as I'm concerned.
Now, for the recap:
- _Vista - NO security updates after 04/10/2012, unless you're using Business or Enterprise edition.
- XP - NO security updates after 04/08/2014, no exceptions.
Meaning: For consumers (i.e., anyone not on Business or Enterprise editions) _Vista is a dead-end product, even when compared to XP. Both in terms of security, and also, potentially, in terms of third-party applications - why spend your time writing for an OS that's gonna die 4 years from now, when you could write for a widely used OS that won't die until 6 years from now? -
but if your a gamer like me..... and if you want DX10 you almost have no choice. ANd yes there is a difference.
-
Because you know Microsoft has *NEVER* extended the service life of a product before, ever.
(those dates are, and have always been, pretty useless) -

pfft... just wait for windows 7... I probably should have, but now that I have Vista running well I am very pleased with my decision.
