Someone is selling a Voodoo Envy 172 for $500. I know that it is relabeled from other Sager, Clevo, and Prostar models. I'm wondering, if I bought the Voodoo, how much trouble would I have finding drivers, BIOS updates, schematics, update parts? If you are familiar with the Envy 172, do you know if the processor can be upgraded (it comes with a Core 2 Duo T7000) same for the GPU, (GeForce 8700M GT 512MB).

I could use some opinions on the wisdom of buying this somewhat older laptop, just because it is affordable and I might be able to goose the performance a little with some better hardware?

    You got that right.

As an owner of voodoo laptops, I would not recommend doing any service with Voodoo/HP. When Voodoo was in business, they were run by a group of crooks. They would dishonor warranty, and force the customer to not only pay for replacement parts, shipping, and ontop of that, there $115 an hour shop fees. Yeah, that is there practice after forcing you to pay there exorbetent rates for their warranty which covered nothing. Now, stuff has changed a bit because Rahul ran his company into the ground. Figures, he didnt even graduate highschool.
If you do buy it, yeah you get a shiny piece of laptop, which represents a company based on shady sales practice, but that is up to you.
I can think of many other better options for $500.

That laptop does have its upgrade possibilities, but the M172 was only offered with support of the 8700GT. You need the M173, which is the newer version which supports through the 8800GTX. It uses T7X00 processors, where X is an odd number. T7500, T7700 etc. It is old technology, where the fastest processor which can be installed is the X7900, which sucks a significant amount of power

You want a voodoo laptop for cheap, I am selling a Pentium M based Voodoo M360 shortly. Its new motherboard is in transit.

Well, I'm convinced. Sometimes a "bargain" just ain't enough. I'll save up and get something that's more current technology. Thanks for keeping me from making, what was probably, a MISTAKE., :D :D
