    Ivy Bridge’s Backwards Compatibility Explained

Looks like 8130/8150 owners won't have an upgrade path to Ivy Bridge with their HM65 chipsets if this is true. 8170 should though as it's HM67. Hope this changes before release in the end...

Anyone know otherwise that isn't under NDA?

    Ouch. D:
At least i may get the option to get Ivy bridge, but it all depends on Clevo / Sager adding the compatible bios update.

Finally i've got some clue about laptop compatibility , now i'd go for 8170 with 3d screen for better future proof) do you know if PCI 3.0 gonna make any difference or just a marketing step towards for video cards, which would use its potential in a couple of years from now? Thanks in advance

the page was updated, hm67 will not be included either.

but you never know, there were chipsets like gl60 where the upgrade just worked.

Well, I guess this means that eventually when ivy bridge comes out and Clevo comes out with a optimus/quick sync equipped 15" gaming notebook that I'll have to sell this one.

The battery power benefits of Ivy Bridge and optimus/quick sync will be substantial compared to our HM65 systems if the rumors are true.

Hey, they'll probably use the same chassis. Motherboard upgrades FTW!

It would be so awesome to upgrade a w860cu to ivy bridge.

Um, wrong. It will last a year if you want cutting-edge technology. But the laptop itself will last for a very long time....plus, who needs that much processing power? No thank you, I'm keeping my current laptop for a minimum of 4 years...

1 year in, I'm upgrading my warranty.
2 years in, I'm upgrading my graphics card.
3 years in, I'm upgrading my RAM.

Yep....makes perfect sense to buy a Sager.

You have 3 months from your ship date to upgrade your warranty.

    I didn't say I'm upgrading it now...I'm upgrading it in 2 years.

Help for the ignorant: Exactly what does Ivy Bridge offer that's leagues above what is currently available from the Sandy Bridge chipsets? As already mentioned, I'm sure it's nice for people who demand cutting-edge technology, the rest of us would be quite happy staying without upgrades for at least 2 years once the initial craze has died off.

Not a whole lot, it's the tock in Intel's "tick-tick" roadmap, which means it's just a die shrink from the sandy bridge architecture. It's supposed to have the new 3D transistor technology, which will bump up CPU speeds ~20% and onboard GPU by 30% (plus they're shooting to have DX11 on the chipset now). It's mostly a lot of incremental improvements, nothing revolutionary other than the new transistor layout.

Isn't the Ivy Bridge chipset supposed to have built in support for USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt as well?

Sandy-Bridge Clevos already have USB3.0 as it is, the Thunderbolt interface isn't in widespread demand enough for it to be a "must-have" for current purchases. If there's not that huge a performance/feature upgrade over the existing quad-cores, then I suppose only serious upgraders will be considering a motherboard overhaul.

As good as QuickBoost in Windows 8 (or whatever the next generation OS from MS is going to be called) and SSD caching promises to be....

It's still not as good as a dedicated SSD in your system :D

    it definitely isnt.
but for those who require more space and cannot afford to buy a decent capacity ssd (256 is what id consider decent), then ssd caching is a very good alternative.
imagine having a speedy 750gb scorpio black and a 20-40gb ssd cache. that would really be the best of both worlds imho

    edit :
i wouldn't call it a must have feature, but to me its the only feature on ib worth having.

In the very least, he can upgrade to a 580m or 6990m. He may even have the ability to upgrade to a next gen card, depending on compatibility. That alone gives him the ability to get 60-70% more graphics power.

I want the upgrade after that, have a laptop in stand by mode that is still connected to the internet downloading email update etc, and battery last a week....

Next-gen Intel CPUs to improve mobile graphics, battery life

Not to mention the built in GPU will get a 60% bump which if sager ever supports would help as can use onboard for desktop usage and dedicated card for the games!

If it makes you feel better, We'll confirm it. Mobile SandyBridge is NOT upgradable to Mobile IvyBridge. Nope, not at all, no hope. That's from Intel.

Desktops, it depends on the motherboard / BIOS
