Hi there, fellas. There's an info in Alienware owner's lounge about overcloking IVB CPU (non-xm) in M17xR4 and M18xR2 laptops. I wonder if any current Sager NP9150/NP9170 onwers or resellers can enlighten us on overclocking CPU ability in those models?

THX for the heads up! Rep +1
The P150 has no bios and no XTU OC support, but the P170 has XTU support, so people could test it from there.
Will also run a test with W110ER bios hack this weekend.

I plan on buying NP9170 with stock 3610QM and extra 200-400Mhz two-step overclock could be a plus for the beast!
Great news for W110ER owners, Prema) -
as far as ive seen only 3720qm and up are supported by this +400Mhz OC feature (check alienware thread for that)
cheers -
Not to be a total noob, but could you possibly post / link the sites to reliable programs for OC the cpu? And if you have done your gpu, if you could do those as well? I'm just totally lost there are so many different ones and I just want to make sure I'm going to use the most accurate one.
Thanks -
For gpu something along the lines of afterburner and sapphire trix.

Nvidia inspector for GPU..
Hopefully we can get this working on the 150EM! -
Hi Prema,
what do you think are the chances of getting XTU enabled for P150EM? Am I correct in thinking its running the same chipset as P170EM so it should be possible? I am contemplating on ordering P150EM and XTU support seems to be the last hurdle for me (as I already own a 2920xm cpu), I am fairly confident that P150 has the thermal capabilities to cope with the extra heat as its using the same fans as P170... -
Its a bit nutty but I wonder if the 170EM bios would run on the 150EM. Differences are not that large (if you take care of heat/power issues), main one being the second 2.5" sata 3 slot configged on the 170.

thermal is not the issue here, just that the current Clevo Bioses are so complex and completely locked down that u basically cant do crap with them
unless its hardcoded... and even then there isnt much room to wiggle....right prema?
as was mentioned before, Nvidia Inspector and MSI Afterburner are great places to start with GPU OC. as for the cpu, the multi OC is best done directly through the BIOS. Intel XTU also offers that option but apparently its not as aggressive as in the BIOS, thus enabling just a two multi-step OC instead of a four-step. keep in mind tho, so far this has ONLY been confirmed in the new alienware m17x r4 with its advanced BIOS options and ONLY with the ivy bridge cpus 3720QM and 3820QM. 3610QM has been shown NOT to offer this kinda OC option.
cheers -
I wouldn't count on seeing XTU on P150EM...
-
and here i was actually hoping u would contradict my statement....
-
Enabling XTU would take a lot of BIOS bricks along the way...I had to socket the BIOS chip on my own machine, to recover by just switching the chip, to do deeper stuff and find out how things work...
-
aw bugger.. what are the odds of p170em bios working on p150em? i'm guessing there would be some sort of protection mechanism that would prevent wrong bios from flashing?
-
W110ER? I can't imagine much OC headroom even if you got it to work...
-
@arcticjoe: We can force flash whatever we want, but it would mostly just right away brick it...
@ E.Blar: Sure, it's just the BIOS I am working on right now...also it doesn't work on 3610QM...

Seriously, it's like giving a 6 year old some crystal meth before his soccer game.

Except it would be more legal.
Ivy Bridge overclockable on Sager NP9150/NP9170?
