Alright, so I have ordered my Sager NP8690 from xoticpc.com on Black Friday last week, and it will be arriving here within a few days.

Anything I will have to or should do the moment I get it, like to improve it or do necessary updates or stuff like that?

    Help is greatly appreciated!

    Regards,

    Jeff

Install Steam, download CS:S, L4D, TF2, and play with the KGB, the AGO, and the APA.

Install drivers, buy Team Fortress 2 for $20 on Steam, install then play it.

Sh%t dude, I've been prepping my software installs and hardware upgrades for the past MONTH getting ready for my 8760. Plan your OS, hardware, tweaks, etc. WAY ahead of time. Hell, the Normandy invasion took less planning than me getting this thing LOL! But it's what I live for so it's definitely a labor of love...

Oh, I forgot -- read the sh%t out of the forums and avoid the wrath of the S.S. at all costs ;)

Exactly man.. Downloading the latest version of the software and tools I use, got my backup/restore strategy in place.. I've even got background images picked out already.. :)

Alright, thanks for all your tips and suggestions! I'm so excited, now I have to play all the games that were released in the past 3 years, because my current computer can't handle anything :D

And I've been reading every post about the NP8690 that there is for the last month, I think I am prepared :)

HA! Glad I'm not the only one!! I haven't gone so far as backgrounds, but I've been maniacal about everything else!! My old workhorse (M90) wasn't equipped to fully handle 64bit OS so this is a lion share of my research and prep.

...and finding hirez pics of babes to show off the screen to by buddies :D

One thing I do plan to setup is a full windows recovery environment on the 100M partition that Win7 creates when you partition within the installer. I didn't realize this is actually a boon for repairing booting issues, etc. but you need the WinAIK and some fussing to get in completely working. This and True Image means practically bulletproof disaster recovery.

What's the matter with all that recovery stuff? Don't you get a cd with the OS to install it again if something goes wrong?

HA! If you knew how long it takes for me to install, configure, etc. all the stuff I load onto a machine you'd understand. Every time I get a new box it's a week at least. As more stuff gets added/updated I religiously image the boot partition. BUT in case I've boinked something really good I can at least get the system running again with minimum fuss. This is in the event of having something that I can't get back from an old image (like download queue or such). Works for me -- YMMV ;)
