Hello,
I ordered a 5793 with matte last month but as you know, it was in the process of being phased out by Sager. Unfortunately, by the time payment was received and my order processed, it seems glossy was the only option left as my unit came with the 1680x1050 glossy. Supprise!![]()
It seems to have no dead pixels, is bright and has great color. Unfortunately, I happen to live in a south facing house with tons and tons of windows so it's almost impossible to use my new pc without a headache.![]()
Is there anything that the glossy screen can be covered with (like a film, etc) to cut down on the reflections? I really, really want to keep the 5793 but I need to be able to use it.![]()
Thanks!

they do not list your model but if you call them they may have something -
Thank you both.
Also, have either of you personally tried those products? -

The real answer is to try it yourself since it is a subjective thing, and virtually no one will be able to duplicate your South facing house with lots of windows.
It will definitely improve the situation, and at that cost how can you lose? -
I don`t want to be sarcastic or anything, but what about closing the shutters/ curtains?

aye you would think closing curtains would work, I generally use my notebook in our conservatory, and when that sun comes out, I start squinting.
we have bright rooms too, but then again I can usually find a darker corner if I really have to
hope everything works out with the film for your screen thug21
as its a wicked notebook -
Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions.
I was asking if anyone tried the products because I was just curious about the products/companies.
I know the anti glare factor is something only I can determine.
Also, it is unfortunately not practical to close every shade/blind here - besides, I like sunlight now and then.I guess the main thing is I bought a laptop to be able to use it almost anywhere, without restrictions.
Anyway, I'll let you know how it goes. I really am liking this notebook in every other respect and would hate to part with it. -
I'm going to give nu shield a try but it seems they might need to following info to make a custom one.
"Diagonal Screen Size*:
Accurate screen dimensions* (mm preferred)
Measure the visible screen from edge to edge of the case
Length:
Width:"
I will be away from my 5793 for a bit and I also don't have anything good to measure it with. Could someone be so kind as to try and get me the exact measurements? All I know is the 17 diag screen size.
This would be much appreciated.
Thank you! -
17 inches=43.18 cm =431.8 mm.

@Thug21,
You might look through this website to see if you can find anything that help you get a matte screen on that lcd.
The website belongs to a company named ScreenTek, Inc., and they generally deal in after-market and replacement LCDs. One of their services, which is discussed at the bottom of the page I linked to above, is the "repolarization" of LCDs and the application of a gloss material to brighten up the screen.
Now, mind you, I have absolutely no idea if that works, or if they're just blowing smoke, but it seems to me that going from matte to glossy is probably more difficult than going from glossy to matte, and they might just have a not-too-expensive solution for you. -
While glossy screens are certainly more difficult to use in a brightly lit room, I must say that even a matte screen is very difficult to use with sunlight streaming in on it. I've used both, and I really don't have a preference under heavy light. The glossy screen is generally a bit brighter, so it doesn't wash out as much from the light, even though the reflections can take some refocusing to ignore.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to try and order that anti-glare from nushield.
@Eleison: I know what you mean about matte screens. Luckely, although my house and office are sunny, they are not sunny enough to wash out a matte.I've always been fine with it.

I know it's been quite overdue (mostly due to a month long illness), but I just wanted to update this thread.
The Anti-glare NUshield worked good at cutting glare but it also cut brightness/color/sharpness too. My Sager glossy with this shield didn't even look as good as my old inspiron 5100's matte screen.
I spoke with Jason Xotic PC and he talked to Sager and they said there were a handful of matte screens in stock for RMA use only. They were kind enough to give me an RMA since I had ordered matte but got glossy and for some odd reason, didn't even get the notification email that I wouldn't get matte.
I sent my PC back to Sager and they put a matte screen on it. However, when I powered the PC on, I noticed an 8 inch scratch in the screen - Arg! I talked to Xotic again and they apologized and said Sager would better check it next time.
I sent my unit in again and wow - I got a perfect matte screen! I had an LPL0000 glossy and this matte is an APP9C62. It's the same in brightness as the glossy and the colors/sharpness are very, very close to!
Viewing angles with both screens were not amazing (like eleron's) but aren't bad either and no dead pixels at all so I'm a happy camper!
Thanks Xotic and Sager!!! -
You mean Justin @ xotic
All in all, thanks for the screen compliment, and congrats on your upgrade -

Cheers, -
Oh I see.
Thought there was only Justin Nolte, Justin Woitte and Amber over there.
My bad -

Oops!
There is no Jason at Xoticpc...just two Justins. -
Thug21 corrected me on this, so I dunno, I also thought there's only 2 J's at Xotic

eleron911, you had it exactly right
Your GOOD -
Yea, been at the Xotic forums since last year, and talked a lot on the Chat, never has any Jason Doe answered or posted around
Thug21, I dunno who Jason is , but he ain`t working at Xotic -
Haha.
Well all I can tell ya is that I've talked to a "Jason" several times. I know it wasn't Justin W (my salesguy) and I know it wasn't Mr. Justin N. I also tend to doubt it was Amber. :twitcy:
Whoever, it was, I now can use my pc for hours without eyestrain.Attached Files:

Be it Jason, Justin, Jack, Jill, or Amber
we love them all! Congrats on your new monitor Thug21. My hat is off to you as well for seeming to not get frustrated for them sending you the wrong type in the first place. Also, congrats on your victory against this month-long illness!

Thanks man!
At least I could play some games after I got out of the hospital. That's about all I could do!
I do hope Sager offers matte as an option in the future, just in case I wanna buy something else. -
After reading all this, it kinda lead me wondering whats the difference between matte and glossy. When I tried googling, all I've got was some mac fanboy blog that really didn't say much. Any opinions? Sorry for jacking this thread, but it seemed to have served its purpose
-
@sujinge9:
Thug21's link is a great read, but if you want it boiled down to a nutshell:
Glossy screens look like an HDTV. Nice, crisp colours, but very reflective.
Matte screens look like OLDER laptop screens. Colours are a little more flat, but there are no reflections on the screen whatsoever, which can make them easier to use in high-light environments.
In my experience, matte vs. glossy boils down almost completely to user preference. I've used both, and tend to prefer the more vibrant colours on a glossy screen, even though I have to occasionally deal with reflections (I work in an office with flourescent lighting, and I also take my laptop out onto my deck occasionally, where I have to deal with direct sunlight. Other people swear they can't see a thing on a glossy screen because of all the glare and refuse to buy anything but a matte screen. -
oh... ok. I tried taking a look at my local best buy and circuit city, but they all have glossy screens in a pretty low light condition where they are their best. So I'm sort of leaning towards glossy...
@eleison and others who have tried both,
Does glossy noticeably "improve" the graphics in games? -
Honestly? Not unless you're OCD about things. The nicest thing about a glossy screen is that blacks are blacker (as opposed to the very deep greyish colour they can be on a matte screen).
I can tell that things look better on my glossy screen, but I pick which screen to play on based on how my back is feeling at the time (my laptop has a glossy screen, while my desktop uses a matte LCD), and I don't feel like I'm "missing out" on anything but resolution if I play on the matte screen (it's a 1024x768 - my glossy is 1440x900).
If you like having colours be as true as they can be, then yes, having a glossy screen improves things, but it's not going to be a night vs. day difference.
Just got a 5793 but glossy isn't working here
