Hi all , so I just got my laptop back from repair and I've noticed that when running a non SLI game my primary GPU (with SLI enabled) is hitting 84c under load. "

When Idling both GPU's are around 50c but when under load the primary one increases to a max (so far) of 84c.

I am using the performance profile on the fan control application thing, but my fans seem slow to speed up and dont reach max even with the fan set to performance, I can set it to maximum but I don't want the fans running at full pelt when not gaming.

So the machine I have is a P870DMG and the GPU's I have are 2 x GTX 980m in SLI.

I guess my main question is, is 84c too hot for 24/7 gaming?

if not is there any way without re-pasting the TIM to lower those temps, a good app to make or download a custom fan curve for.

Oh yeah when trying Football Manager 2017 and This war of mine, the second GPU barely gets used (and stays around 50-55c, I've primarily put this down to them not really being SLI optimized games.

It seems a bit high, either cheap thermal compound or maybe not proper mount of the heatsink. The notebook should run the GTX 980M in around 70s, considering that it runs a GTX 980 desktop on around the same temps as you have right now on furmark.

also no, 84c won't kill your GPU, it's just not that desireable.

You can't use the 980 desktop class GPU to compare as it uses both heatsink areas and fans to cool the same GPU.

The "overclock" profile is the best, it spins up with high load rather than waiting for high temps to happen first

The option isn't always there, I think it only appears if you have a K cpu, and/or XTU installed or something like that

Another Question.....Is the default GPU heatsink in the P870DMG made out of aluminium, I'm tempted to get some Conductonaut liquid metal TIM, but I'm not sure what the stock heatsink is made out of.

Also is it safe to put liquid metal Tim on a gtx 980m, and finally I have seen people cut strips of thin electrical tape and place it over the transistors surrounding the core to prevent getting the liquid metal on them, does this tape stay on even when you reinstall the heatsinks, and it doesn't melt?

The kapton tape I used is designed for high temp applications and is very thin.

Yes heatsinks are copper. Conductonaut is fine. Its what I used.

So i re-pasted both my GPU's using the gelid paste i had left over (I have to say its a marked improvement) however I'm now having issues when running single GPU games in that said single gpus heat gradually increases up until the low 70's so far, it used to be the mid 80's , yet i can run SLI games such as GTAV and both gpus barely hit 65c. Any Ideas.

low 70s is good, not much you can do without some mods.

SLI usually loads the GPUs less than a single gpu in use as they can't fully leverage all the processing power.
