Been looking to upgrade from my Gateway P7811FX since its kind of aged and showing in games and photo editing.

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor P8400 2.26 GHz
    4096 MB 1066 MHz DDR3 memory at 1066mhz
    NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GTS With 512 MB

After reading lots on here and weighing the BlackFriday and Cyber Monday Options I've decided to get a P170HM from Malibal.

I'm rolling the dice on going back to an ATI video card. I swore them off after I had nothing but issues with a 8900xt. From the sounds of it the drivers have gotten better but still aren't on par with Nvidia. I would have gone with the 580 if it wasn't priced so retardedly.

I know that photoshop CS5 is optimized and certified for nvidia GPU's. I'm hoping that the 6990 works just fine.

As far as a review. I'll give you my impressions of it and how it performs. But my days of tweaking every last thing and benchmarking are over, takes to much time. Might OC the video card after a while but thats probably about it.

Need to find a good SSD now. I see the Vertex 3 coming up a lot. Got any recommendations?

They were damn good laptops for the time. I'm totally surprised at how well its stood up to the test of time and every day use. How did yours stand up over time? My screen got a little wobble and the palm rests have the wear marks but thats about it. No dead fans or goofy issues.

If Gateway made another gaming class laptop like that I would have bought it.
People laugh when I say Gateway but the FX series was surprisingly good.

I am also waiting on my Satori to arrive :)

My first gaming laptop was a Gateway FX with 8800GTS and I too was surprised how good it was at the time and how long it lasted me.

Back when I was looking to purchase I was always recommended Intel. You will get a better price point on some of the other options, but Intel has the reputation for quality.

Samsung 830 series came out recently and its 64gb version uses 0.11W when active. Should consider checking it out.

I've had my Satori for a few weeks now and it's awesome! I also came from a 7811 that I bought for $1100 about 3 years ago and sold for $400 a few months ago. That thing was definitely an exception to the Gateway reputation... Very well built and reliable machine.

The Satori is a great machine and I'm looking to pickup a SATAIII SSD for it now with Synchronous NAND. Also picked up another 8GB of DDR3 for $30 yesterday to bump it to 16GB. Not trying to thread derail but if anyone has opinions on a brand that works better than another with our machines, I'd listen.

I missed out on the ram deals since i was to busy trying to configure what laptop I wanted.
Now i'm a day late and a dollar short or most if not all of the deals.

Don't worry about side tracking the thread. I'd also like to hear who has what hardware in their Satori and how they like it.

Does anyone know if the Intel Smart Response Technology works with our laptops or is it specific to the Z68 chipset?

Unfortunately, it does not. Intel Smart Response Technology (also known as SSD caching) is not supported on any of the mobile chipsets right now.

GSkill rams are pretty cheap and work very well, I bought 8gigs for my last qosmiox505, never had any issues with it!

Damn, that would be real handy on a laptop. Just pop in a second drive and call it good.

The best alternative right now is one of the Momentus XT hybrid drives. They bridge the gap between SSD speed and HDD size. I'd highly recommend one of them if you want a little of both. Or you could go the route of a single smaller SSD and a second larger HDD. It's a little more manual effort going that route over either the hybrid or SSD caching, but it basically does SSD caching all in one device.

You can never have too much hard drive space. I got a 240gb wildfire ssd and am already down to 80gb of space left just a week after getting my laptop. That's only apps too, I have my user profile mapped to the 2nd 750gb drive and that's where all of my music, pics, and movies are. The ssd is great though. I've got some really large access databases and they just fly on this thing. No slowdowns when clicking links in the DB to switch items like I had when running it from an hdd.

That exactly the reason why I haven't picked up an 80 or 120gb SSD right now. Its just not big enough and anything with more capacity the price goes up exponentially.

Like Malibal suggested, the moments might have to be the stop gap until the SSD prices come down more.
