    @Shyster,

I was trying to read what actually driven you to try and analyse his photos with an HEX editor and to further ask the poster if he used photoshop in anyway what so ever. I see no reason other then the one I explained for such actitivity since the photos themeselfs show no artistic or technical interest to grant such line of questioning.

Nevertheless, yes the Photoshop metadata there is yet to be technically explained. If I had an iPhone I would try that myself. A fellow worker has one, I will try it tomorrow or the day after.

    Again offtopic.

Idle curiousity. I've just recently spent a lot of my very dear spare time figuring out how to work my way around the guts of a JPEG and the EXIF data it contains in order to do some automation on how I manage the burgeoning collection of DSLR pictures I've taken of my daughter and wife. So, when the images were initially posted and introduced as having come directly from an iPhone, I got curious about what the EXIF data from an _Apple product like the iPhone would look like.

When I initially ran the images through Exiftool, a very handy little console app developed by Phil Harvey, I didn't get anything other than the standard JPEG metadata that all images compressed using the JPEG format contain. That didn't seem right to me since the standards applicable to digital cameras promulgated by JEITA require that, e.g., the basic parameters of the camera be included in the EXIF data of the JPEG file, so I ran those files through the same hex viewer I'd been using to deconstruct my own DSLR image files (just as an aside, one of the really annoying things about the JEITA Exif standards is that each camera maker and app maker has the discretion to code everything in either Big endian format or Little endian format, so you have to be prepared to read each file either way). Once I did that, the Photoshop identifier popped right out at me.

Now I've explained myself, an explanation you can take or leave, but it's all the explanation you're going to get.

Explanation accepted. It is unfortunate that the question was done to a PCMW customer, a customer of a company that you researched recently.

PS: I'm develoing a site for photographers. I too have to deal with EXIF. Fortunately Microsoft.NET already has the API to work with that standard.

edited first post with benchmark from HDtune. This is with AHCI disabled, I guess I should have ran this test before when I had it enabled =/ Also posted on OCZ forums to see what they have to say, may reinstall with AHCI disabled this weekend if I have time.

so since you have the ssd, can you tell us if it gets hot for you then by the right handrest? if its cold then we definately know its the hard drives that are the culprits.

    Blue-
They give you the CD along with key, I had to activate it, they only did the install. You just reminded me, I didn't active yesterday when I did my 2nd reinstall.

    Helio-
It still gets hot, I've been gaming for some time now and it's pretty hot. I was also under the impression SSD's run cooler, I don't know if it is SSD itself or if something else is casuing heat.

    Thank you.

Very interesting what you say about the heat. I can't say I like what I hear/read.

If its getting hot with the SSD, its OBVIOUSLY the northbridge or whatever that component is that is the culprit. Sigh, I hope mine is not like that and if it is, a test of PCMW to honour my trade in for a revised version.

Teebo, I heard that the Zalaman 1000 and 2000 coolers are very good, and you can place them on your lap and bed.

I just noticed last night that I did not have SP1 installed for Vista. I assumed the Vista CD that came with the laptop already had intergrated. Will run the benchmarks again if I have time tonight to see if there's any improvement, especially with the SSD.

Ah, that's the cooler the sales rep described to me. The new one you have now. I hope I get to test it out before you tell me how it is. :)

Now for the wait, the laptop is halfway to Miami now. I can only hope the second courier reacts swiftly to ship it to me and result in me having it on Friday instead of Tuesday (Monday is Independence Day here).

Got my laptop back, no more dead pixels :) They had me wait in the production lab of some sort. They got tons of laptops in there, saw quite a few 860TU's. Also got to look inside one that is open, positive the heat is not from the HDD's now. The thing is situated in the middle.

They made any comments on the heat that is being felt on the right of the palm rest? I was assured by a CSR that when my laptop was tested that there was no serious heat being felt there, just a subtle warmness and with the cooler almost nothing.

Let's hope thats the case when I test it out tomorrow.

You know, now that you say that, I think you make a good point. Looking at the service manual, the harddrive is more central than off to the right of the touchpad....the thing that is to the right of the touchpad is the wireless lan...but that doesn't seem to be enough to generate the heat people are saying

Possibly on a chip on the mobo itself, I know someone suggested the North or South Bridge being the culprit and that sounds resonable at this point. I should have asked them about the heat when I was there, just didn't cross my mind.

Note, after updating the video drivers to 177.79 I got a boost of over 100 points with 3dmark06. Will test some different drivers when I have more time.

This has been debated to death. The harddrive is the source of heat as several users have used touch-testing to see which components are hottest and there is universal consensus that the harddrive is the hottest component within the chassis.

As for the location, I think the heat doesn't manifest through the touchpad or is less noticable because for one our fingers spend very little time on the touchpad relative to the palmrest, secondly the touchpad may be a better insulator of heat than the adjacent palm rest which allows heat through more easily.

Thirdly the area under the right palmrest is for the most part empty space and I am fairly sure the air in that space heats up much faster than whatever solid components reside under the left palmrest, which is why even though the harddrive is in the middle, the heat is most noticable on the right.
