As some of you know I ordered my unit from PCMW despite all the criticism they've been getting on these boards.

Today I changed the CPU from P9500 to T9600. Here's the e-mail I received from them on the update.

    Hi *****,

Your updated configuration includes the Bluetooth, Bag, 320GB 7200RPM drive, T9600 CPU, 5 years lojack, 9800M GT, 2GB DDR3 single DIMM, and the other options listed on your invoice. The new total for your order is $1675.00

    Thank You,
    PC MicroWorks Support Team

I'll review the unit when it comes - should be 1st to 2nd week of august.

Yeah, I'm curious about them too. Why buy from them when they're like $1000 more expensive than xotic or pnb for relatively the same configuration?

I don't know what you are talking about Sox, but the configuration that DRTH has from PCMW is $1000 CHEAPER not expensive, go configure it.

Do you guys think there will be another big sale on Labor Day? PCMW had a big sale on Memorial Day and July 4th.

Hey guys - I'm just updating everyone as to the status of my order because there has been a lot of things said about PCMW. In fact there is a sticky about how they are the reincarnation of another failed company. I pre-ordered with them despite that issue, and despite the fact that other resellers on these boards insinuated that their prices would be cheaper than PCMW's President's Day sale.

That's when I ordered mine - president's day weekend. Throughout that time they've mislead some people about the ability of the Quad core + the 9800gtx to be put into the m860tu and some people have shied away from them because of that.

However - for those people that stayed with them through thick and thin - and who protected themselves by paying with credit card - are the ones that will (hopefully) come out the big winners in this. Other retailers have done a great job at persuading people not to buy from PCMW and a lot of people cancelled their orders because of that and purchased from those resellers at higher prices for what those resellers call - peace of mind (essentially).

There are few of us left who got these amazing deals - maybe less than a handful on this forum. Resellers did a great job of scaring people to THEIR (resellers) benefit. Tons of orders were placed with them for the 5796 + m860tu and they cashed in on the fear.

But - it's good for me because PCMW is willing to go into the red on these units just to build up their reputation. It's bad for everyone else though who didn't order from them.

Anybody that still has an order with PCMW from the President's day sale - PM me and i'll tell you what I did to get the best deal you can. Despite what you may think or what you were told - you still can get somewhat of a student discount on your order. I got free shipping + 50 bucks off. That's 100 in total for student discount.

I'll document my progress with PCMW as it happens to give you all more insight as to whether they will keep their end of the bargain on this unit - we'll see mid august.

    Hope this helps.

I order from them too during July 4th sale. Here's what I got:

    Intel® Core™2 Duo P9500 (2.53Ghz/45nm/1066Mhz/6MB)
4096MB Ultra Speed DDR3 1333MHz Extreme Performance Memory

    Standard 8X High Speed DVD-RW / CD-RW DL Burner

    15.4" HD WSXGA+ 1680x1050 Crystal-View X-treme Bright LCD
8 Channel Advanced SRS WOW Surround Sound System
High Speed 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Networking Adapter
Internal High Speed V90k Dial Up Modem
Built In 802.11ABG 54mbps High Speed Wireless Adapter
Integrated Advanced Bluetooth v2.0 Wireless Adapter
    Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
3 Year Diamond PLUS Blanket Protection Advanced Coverage

    The warranty includes:
3 Years of Coverage on All Parts and Labor

    *FREE* Dead Pixel Protection
*FREE* Virus & Spyware Protection Package
*FREE* Notebook Carrying Bag With All Laptops
*FREE* Advanced Aluminum Alloy High Flow Notebook Cooler With All Laptops

And my quote was for $2,618.00 plus tax the total was $2,847.08

Not real cheap but I compared it with other resellers and this came out to be the cheapest I could get. There's no shipping because I am going to pick it up from there shop. I also paid with credit card so can always dispute if things get shakey. Will let post how it goes once I get it.

Oh I see, that's insane. I didn't notice your price of $1600 down there. So basically PCMW is cheaper ONLY if you get a deal on a holiday... other than that the other retailers are cheaper? Because, like Jager said, it's $2634 for BASE config... a $2634 configuration from xotic or pnb is more powerful than the base configuration at PCMW, except for the RAM it looks like. Maybe I still don't get how PCMW opperates, but please tell me if that's wrong, lol.

you're pretty much exactly right. except - it just so happens that the deals we got on president's day got sweeter because they threw in a bunch of free stuff with the orders. then we price matched with xotic but of course you only price matched what you ordered from PCMW - not the free stuff (becuase they are waiting concessions). so in the end we made out with VERY good buys. got a little complicated to do but it's worth saving almost 1k

Oh, good deal then. So PCMW does price matching? Does that mean you could pricematch xotic/pnb and only pay extra for the features that are actually better on the Edge, such as the RAM?

Well hopefully they actually start shipping. The general order it seems is that Sager ships first, then the other companies in the US do. So if Sager is expecting the Units by August 8th, expect PCMW to receive it 2-3 weeks later.

Take a look at the sticky Mr. Sanitarium and then you'll see what i'm talking about. Nobody's removed it yet so the powers that be still don't want people to buy from PCMW. People are terrified to deal with this company for obvious reasons. I'm doing everyone a service by taking a chance (albeit getting a good deal while doing so) but still it's like playing the lottery in the end. If it doesn't pan out then I get screwed but if it does then people know PCMW is an alright vendor if they sold me this laptop at this price.

Maybe who's allegiance (to buyers) you should question is those resellers who are protecting their interests on these forums by trying to stay being the sole vendors here. They have an oligopoly going for them right now. Further, maybe you should consider why they didn't match PCMW's price, and why they insinuated they would give you a better price than being smug at the person doing their best to help everyone out in the future - and taking a chance for it.

About the price of PCMW, I don't know how they make profit from these deals. I remembered Justin or Donald said that their profit margin is only 3% - 5%. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know what Justin or Donald's profit margin is - nor do I think that any reseller would actually be telling consumers their real profit margins.

PCMW is NOT making a proffit on this handful of sales. It's my guess that they are doing damage control for their "tarnished reputation" as some people would put it. They're going into the red BIG TIME on these orders so that they can show people their metal so to speak. I guess i've gambled on a second chance - hopefully to my advantage.

Haha, wha...!? If not for the mention of the sticky I would have had no idea what you were going on about. I just got tired of seeing so many of your posts rubbing it in our noses about your amazing deal, only to go to PCMW myself to find that their base config for the "Edge" was more than what I spec'd out at XoticPC, Sager, or PowerNotebooks. I shook my fist at thee every time :p
I guess that's how they can afford to give people such as yourself such a good deal - the rest of us are paying through the nose.

Anyway, sorry, I didn't realize you were on some sort of personal crusade. Good luck with that, and thanks for taking such a big risk for us here at NBR.

Edit - Does the Edge not feature wireless N? On the configuration page it just says ABG.

Not sure a crusade to convince people to buy there because they did a sweet (cheap) deal for you is all that well thought out, particularly considering what most people are worried about anyway - the sustainability of that business.

Anyway, good luck with that mate.

Selenium + Petrov: point taken from the both of you. I understand where both of you are coming from and yeah it would suck if I got a crappy deal on this laptop too. I wouldn't want to pay wha other resellers were asking for this laptop either when someone else is getting such an awesome deal. Well think about it for a second - read between the lines guys - maybe i'm doing this so people can wake up and just realize how other resellers have messed them over on the price of this laptop.

Apologies for rubbing it in but so far I haven't seen ONE post on these forums where people are angry at those resellers that said not to buy from PCMW. Everybody is happy go lucky about paying premiums for the "service" behind these laptops. But many people bought into the "service is the value added" component of their business. And don't get me wrong - service is awesome and XotiC and Power both have amazing service but for some service isn't everything - price may be the deciding factor for many.

Not even one post of an angry person. Not except my own. Once again - apologies for re-iterating the price but you see my point now hopefully. It's like people are robots you know. And now I get attacked because I wasn't a robot. This is not a crusade - just trying to open your eyes. This isn't about the price I got at all - it's about people over-benefitting from YOUR pockets. I can't make this any clearer.

DRTH dude I hear you, but I'm not brave enough to bite the bullet and go with a company I know nothing about. Yeah the price I had with PCMW was lower than the one I got at XoticPC but at the end of the day, I think I took the safest route without taking any risks and that is much more important to me than service or price really because now I have peace of mind of going with a trusted company and I know that my money is safe with them. Plus I know I'll get a well built computer whereas I don't really know what to expect from PCMW.

Doc Z - That's cool bro. Whichever of the two main retailers here you chose i'm sure would do a great job with your build. Your money is safe I presume with them. Wish you all the best bro.

If this thing doesn't go through then i'm gonna order through Killernotebooks. Seems like they know a LOT more about the thermals and capabilities of these notebooks.

Further - if we actually do get these notebooks - then I suggest all ppl that got it from PCMW get the warranty from that site Donald told us about that insures laptop owners since PCMW's future existence may be uncertain.

Thanks bro, I really hope PCMW comes through for you. You're a brave man lol.

You're absolutely right about no one discussing the other reseller pricing on these forums. There was all this talk of the other resellers having extremely competitive pricing which made most people think it would be much lower than PCMW.....but it wasn't. At least not for some of us. If only PCMW was around a bit longer I would have trusted them, even in light of all the recent allegations thrown around. But yeah, definitely wasn't a good look for resellers bashing PCMW while flaunting their own prices...only to find out their prices are higher. I think in the end though, a lot of people (including myself) feel like we really only have 2 solid choices to go with and that's XoticPC and powernotebooks.

Hmmm, I wonder why any person would go 'into the red big time'? Conscience? Tormented souls? Do you believe it is that ( honestly)?. Save their reputation, perhaps? But how will this 'act of contrition' get out to the market and achieve that (other than by one or two people's posts :) )? Will this brave chivalry be enough to make me and all other potential customers pay $500+ more to them than to xoticpc on principle? Unless the big discount was heavily publicized, or they had to compensate you because their own small print stopped them from canceling ... I would be cautious as to what $ benefit they could get by this 'amazing' discount, I don't think there is any other (moral) reason a person would 'go into the red big time' in our day and age...

Anyway, I sincerely hope I'm wrong and you get a below cost laptop.

DRTH_STi: i must say i don't really think we are paying "premiums" by going through xotic or PNB. You got something a good deal below the price PCMW was advertising. If someone were to try to buy from PCMW now, they would be overpaying by a lot. Unless they ditched PCMW, people did not elect to take the sager resellers over PCMW. You were only given such a good deal because other people ditched PCMW but you stuck with them.

My bad - I guess some people like to pay 500+ more for laptops than they should.

I'm not gonna talk about the price anymore because it hits people sorely - as it should - but that soreness is directed to the wrong person.

I'll leave you guys with this. You ALL would have gotten a cheaper price BUT FOR the actions of few resellers here. Nobody explained to you that you could pay via Credit Card and be safe in your purchase from PCMW - nobody wants their business being taken awway.

Despite the fact that prices are higher at PCMW right now - that's not the point. If you like having only two major resellers competing here for your money then that's your perogative. Ever noticed the prices at Power and XotiC? Last time I checked they seemed EXACTLY the same. Wonder why? Bet the conversation went something like this..."if we keep our prices at the same point we can be our own competition and the only thing that'll differentiate us is our service which is pretty much the same anyway-we will dominate".

LOL - I dare you - price up some machines and you'll see nominal price differences at best. That's what happens when you have an Oligopoly (few players who control the market by creating barriers for entry).
