Hey everyone!
I have had a Sager NP5791 for since last November.(WOOT! WOOT!) I love it, except for the keyboard sometimes. It seems like ever 300th keystroke or so doesn't register. The first few times I just thought is was just me, but this has been a consistent problem for months now. Is this normal? Or did I get a bad keyboard?

I´ve found a quick fix for this some time ago...
The problem here is on the PS/2 bus... Both the touchpad and the keyboard shares the same bus on diferent PS/2 ports.
So the touchpad even if not used will ocupy some of bus bandwidth, stagnating the available bandwidth for the keyboard. That will create higher latencies on the PS/2 bus, and thus will create some delays on the inputs from the keyboard. If that latency becomes to high, some of the inputs may lose on the way and never be received and thus some times the keyboard will not register some keypresses.
If you use an external mouse, you will not need the touchpad workin on the same time. So you will need the Synaptics drivers to sucessful disable the touchpad(the Fn + F1 hotkey don´t disable it, it will continue to use bandwidth space).
(Select the device and click disable)
Here you have the synactics drivers: http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm
It fixed that problem in my M570RU... -
I have the "character eating" issue too sometimes.
Though I mostly use a USB mouse and disable the touchpad with Fn+F1 . -
I do have this problem sometimes as well...it was waaay worse on my m15x though. That was why I retuned the thing. I did find, when I was experimenting with that computer, that the problem would go away when I uninstalled the synaptics drivers. Thank you Audigy for explaining why. What you're saying is that if you just hit that disable button (without having to completely remove the drivers from the computer), the problem will go away completely, and then you can re-enable the trackpad whenever you're not using an external mouse? I'll play with this some more later, but that's really good to hear. Thanks a lot.
So is this just something that happens with all laptops? I noticed it on my m15x (to a huge extent), and its present here some of the time...is there any laptop that doesn't have this problem-causing conflict? -

That was the only thing I didn't love about my Sager 5791
Now it's perfect!
+1 rep (+2 if I could) -
It's cool, but it's a workaround. I find it weird that the problem exists at all. =/ ...if this is something inherent in the design of laptops, how come not all laptops experience it?
-
Luck of the draw maybe
-
Well, after repeated experimentation, I don't think I even notice a huge difference between trackpad enabled and disabled anyway. Mabe I'll play around with it some more later.
-
You might also check to see if there's an update for the KBC firmware that alleviates the problem; some of the NP9262s have been getting BIOS beeping due to keyboard buffer problems that were solved with a KBC firmware update.
-
Where would one look for that?
-
The KBC firmware is the fan firmware so if you have the latest version of that (7sh) you're good.
-
It can be a pretty irritating problem at times. Glad to hear others are experiencing it (thought it was just my notebook). Appreciate the info. I'll have to try the suggested fixes.
-
@eleron911
Would you kindly upload the firmware 1.00.07sf to rapidshare.com, because megaupload is inaccessible from Turkey. Thanks in advance.
PS: Other users may upload too. -
You can find the latest firmware, along with all other drivers off the support section of www.sagernotebook.com. Also, please don't cross-post.
-
Thanks Callidor.
I cross-posted because there are chances that the forums are outdated and no more responsive. -
yes but a few to many times. trust me here at the sager forum we will respond to your questions. if no one does pm me or one of the others here we will help you the best we can

How come when I asked about 50 times before buying my sager if anybody had experienced this issue, nobody spoke up, but now there seem to be plenty of people who have encountered it? -.- Oh well..it's not a big enough deal (atleast on my system) to make my particularly upset...just wish people had been upfront with it before >.>
-
no problems here...
-
What issue are you referring to, Callidor?
-
-
Oh,the keyboard missing a letter once in a while ? Happens very rare, maybe once a day or so.
It`s not like you can`t double check -
It's a little more frequent than that for me...but not a huge deal. it kind of varies depending on what program/environment i'm typing in also. i also notice that the space bar has more frequent issues than any other character.
-
This is actually starting to get me really frustrated. I think that since I know this problem is there, I'm having a more difficult time typing naturally, and that, in turn is causing more issues. I don't know why it is that problems like this (the sort that nobody else ever seems to have) like to follow me. This is the second laptop I've had with this issue, and most people have never even heard of it. I guess it's kind of comforting to see that I'm not alone with it, but it still seems really unfair. I don't want to have to return this laptop, just like I did my m15x...and I know that the issue is nowhere near a severe here..but I'm a quick typist. It just gets on my nerves that I have to constantly be looking over what I type, checking for "mistakes" that aren't my fault. Also, I don't think disabling the trackpad really makes any difference in my case. I guess this post does't really have a purpose...I'm just trying to let off some steam. Of all the technially "minor" problems for me to have repeatedly, I can't really think of one more annoying than this.
-
I found this issue really annoying when I first got my laptop, but it seemed to mysteriously disappear at some point about a month after...I have no idea why as I don't think I changed any firmwares/bioses at that point...
-
It also seems to me like it kind of varies in its severity from time to time and also in different typing environments. Also, it seems to me that the vast majority of missed key strokes are the space bar. But that may just be because it's a commonly hit key. This is getting annoying..I don't know what I'm going to do...it's the same EXACT problem as on my last laptop -.-
