I finally picked up one of those RjTech.com Clevo M570RU-U rigs... with 4GB & 8700M vid card... no OS... no HD... no Proc...
Then installed the T9300 I purchased ... and Intel M25 160GB SSD SATA drives.
Now that the Warranty is nearly up - It's time to being the modding on the laptop.

Reminded / inspired by Mickey's Fieldmouse [Fallout3] Gaming Laptop...
I had the need to mod my laptop.

What should I etch on the back cover of my laptop?
    Red suggested a Abram's Enterprise:

but I really don't like the backend of that ship.

I really do like the EnterpriseA.... and this Tobias Richter rendering appealed to uber Treker-ness:

I really enjoy Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and thought it would make a nice back etching.

Converted the pic (with permission - Thanks Tobias) to black and white... inverted it... sized it... and etched at 60% power @ 100% speed.

5 hours in my laser cutter and out comes - Khan! The Gaming Laptop.

    And a detail shot:

I'm pleased with the results; but I feel there may be a better method / better etch in the cards somewhere.
I'll have to give this some additional thought - but my biggest stumbling block is I really don't want to disassemble the entire screen to get the brushed aluminum peice out of the laptop. Anyone have a tutorial/how to or some other advice?

T'will have to ponder more on this - while I do that; check out some of our other projects like my Star Trek Pinball mods...

    nice.... :)

thats a lot of etching... you did the either black back to a laser etched mural

most laser etches I have seen on these Clevo's were just for a specific figure ... never the entire LCD casing... a lot of time consumption there.

Nice well done, I'm a big trek fan, more of a TNG fan than any of the others, but I've watched every star trek move and episode there is to watch pretty much, and that is one cool rig.

BTW are you as anxious for the release of the fan made game "Star Trek Excalibur" as I am? it's going to be a blast!

I'd really like to get another silver metal backing for the laptop so I can try a three tone paint / etch application to put some color on the back of the laptop. Unsure where I could get another part. Anyone have an idea?

not sure what you mean here... can you rephrase?

I have a silver+black Clevo... and laser etched the "white" into the silver aluminum cover of the laptop.

yeah... it took about 2hrs to laser etch the entire laptop back and that was as fast as my laser cutter could go. Two passes to get the logo etched this deep for a total of 5hrs including setup.

I cut my teeth on books of the original series / episodes... found the books in my fathers books one day in high school... enjoyed them quite a lot. Then on my 16th birthday; NG came out the same weekend. Was hooked. I did go to every movie as a kid... and every one as an adult. I remember fondly the voyage home. and spock dieing in TWoK. My star trek collection just got bigger with all flavors of pinball made about the Enterprise.

    I do now! ;)
TBH, I don't give Khan enough attention - ATTN2Detail was a lot more work so is my favorite. Khan gets lanparty attention... and when I'm on a trip somewhere... but he stays off a little too much.
