    Hey guys,

I know there are a number of threads talking about laptop coolers, but my main question is:

Which cooler is best for using on your lap?

This may be a silly question, but I've never owned a laptop before and I plan on traveling with it a lot and foresee it having to be used on my lap most of the time.

It would be silly to play games on 8662 on your lap, but that's my personal opinion. Zalman 2000 is an excellent cooler, but I don't think it gives you such a good portability or the comfort on your lap.

your really not supposed to play these on your lap. we should really call these things:
"portable gaming non-lap-laptops that should only play games when unportable and tied to an outlet"

    Haha, I got ya.

    Thanks for the replies~ =]

I do have one question tho, Sabricaze..
I saw your thread about choosing a cooler and that you went for the Zalman but, now that the Antec 200 is a little cheaper, if you could go back would you choose the Antec?

    Edit:
How does that work out for ya Soviet?
Do you use a cooler? or does it do alright without one?

It works very well for me. I use a passive cooler with my M570TU and my GPU rarely passes 50*C when playing CS:S on my lap or on a desk.

not to be rude or anything but the source engine is a perfectly optimized engine and not really that taxing on a gpu

It doesn't matter. <50*C is still a very cool GPU temperature for CS:S on this notebook.

Just to add, I use my laptop on my lap playing games.

Sometimes with a cooler, sometimes nott.

My laptop actually runs cooler on my lap, than it does on a table.
But i prop my foot up on my knee, so it has plenty of ventilation. :D
Sounds weird tho, just casually. You should be able to get what i mean. :p

    yes, i agree. :)

But id say 50C is still good, even for CS:S.

I can't say for Antec... All I know right now is that Zalman works really well with my 8662. Not sure with Antec.

I like the NZXT line. BIg, lots of fans, and works very well. I have one on my m1710 right now, and I love it as it keeps about 10c off the normal temps.

Yeah i use mine on my lap and it runs cooler than on a table. just gap your legs so the fan can breathe. Otherwise I would suggest one of those fanless gel cooling pads. They should be comfortable to use and relatively effective though i havent paired one with the m860

Deja vu... ...I'm sure I've replied to this in another thread...

What's with all the guys on here, the lack of respect for frying your crotch seems unnatural. Or was all that scientific palaver and the change to calling them notebooks instead of laptops in reaction just industrial hearsay?

Safety for the lads, I always put it on a board of some sort if I need to put it on my lap or a couch/bed.

As for the subjecta add another vote for the Zalman, though I've heard sweet stuff about the Enermax Aeolus.

I have an Antec cooler, works great with this laptop.
Keeps the hard drive under control for sure.

I use the Enermax Aeolus; fits the laptop perfectly, matches it in colour and material, and the 25cm fan is perfect because this laptop has a lot of open holes across the bottom-side.

Only problem is it is too quiet imho, I would have preferred it spun faster and louder for even more cooling. Regardless it drops the laptop temperatures and the internal fan speed (which can get pretty loud itself so that dropping is the more important part).

True, looking at the bottom of the M860TU, the NC2000 seems to focus on the heatsink/GPU areas, though this does have some all-round effect on the whole notebook.

I've considered swapping to an Enermax Aeolus because it seems to have more area coverage. The only think that worries me is the exposed fan at the bottom. With the NC2000 completely covered in metalics, the only thing to worry about is scratching the paint when traveling. Would you say that the Enermax Aeolus would be easily damaged if knocked a bit during journeys?

Another Q - I haven't seen pics of dissembled. Is it quite easy (requires little space) to pack once done?

One last thing - It would be excellent if we could get some temp tests running around here. As there are many M860TU users now, how about it? Testing in similar climates, using similar CPU/GPU's but with different coolers to find out which one is most effective overall but to keep tests fair.

I use my M860TU on my bed with the NC2000, although I just use it as a stand and keep the cooler turned off.

I have had the NC2000 scratch my M860TU when sticking them both in the same bag so now I always keep them in seperate compartments when travelling.

Normally the NC2000 drops my temps from 5-10 degrees, but with the recent heat wave in the UK it was only dropping them from 3-5 degrees as the ambient tempurature was a lot higher. I can get the exact numbers if you want to start a comparison.

so for the M860TU you guys prefer the NC2000 over the NC1000? I'm looking to get one as well so this interests me :)

    NC2000 gets my vote.

Keeps my 860tu cold in idle, and lukewarm during stress test's

Best 50 euro I've spent in a while.

I have the NC1000 for my 8662. I chose it over the 2000 because the size of the 2000 accomodates 17in lappies which I didn't need. With the 1000 your 8662 overhangs the pad about an inch on each side, but fitting nicely and squarely on the frame.
