My laptop will only run when it is NOT receiving external power. I can plug it in while it is off and the battery will charge. If I then unplug it from the wall, it will boot up and run just fine until battery power runs out. But if at any point I plug it in, it will restart and then continuously crash while still attached to an external power source. Any ideas? Thanks much!

which model, how old?
do you use a surge protector or UPS?
it might be either hardware and software depending on the environment during the crashes.
try to start up the notebook and get into the BIOS menu, then plug and unplug to see if there is a crash, if there is not then its a Windows problem.
if it does crash in the BIOS, then it is probably hardware. Then you would need to contact the support from where ever you purchased it from. -
I believe that it is a hardware problem. It will crash in bios. I'm not sure on the model, tho it is a couple years old. I don't typically use a surge protector or UPS although the same problem occurs when connected to one. Any ideas?

it might be too late to use a surge protector or UPS now.
people dont realize that the power bricks connected to wall sockets... does not do an efficient job in power the notebook and protecting itself from electrical damage. I think that it might have damaged the brick and/or the power input of the notebook motherboard.
Look at the bottom of the notebook and tell us what model # that you see. It might help. But you definitely must get it back to the vendor for repair. -
I do not have the laptop with me but could find the model number if needed. I've tried using different bricks and the same problem occurs. Does it sound like a problem with the power input on the motherboard then? How is such a thing fixed? Thanks for the help!

if your are posting here, then is it a Sager notebook?
if the damage is narrowed down to just the power components, then it might not be too costly, if it damaged the motherboard itself, then it would be expensive.
you gotta know the model# and then contact the vendor for their opinion and pricings for repair.
