Laptop fails to boot Windows 7
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear all,
I have a problem with my laptop. I am currently using a Sager NP8690 with Windows 7 Home Premium. I am currently not using a battery for my laptop as I experienced a high rate of battery failure if I plug in my battery ie bloated battery, hence my laptop will be plugged in whenever I am using it.
About a month ago, I realise that if I start my laptop after a prolong period of non-usage (about 3 days), my laptop would auto shut down during booting of windows. Upon restarting, Repair software would kick in saying that my laptop had shut down unexpectedly.
Is there any way I can diagnose the problem if it's hardware or software related? Don't really want to send back to Sager as my warranty is over. Thank you so much for reading and suggestions are very much welcome.
Regards

Sorry to hear about the issue there. When you run the repair utility, does it report back any problems fixed? Does it always work after you run the repair utility? Is it actually repairing or is it restoring Windows to a previous session?
If it is getting back into Windows after the repair, my first guess would be that it is software related. Might be a corrupt windows file causing that. Have you tried reinstalling the OS yet? -

You can try the usual troubleshooting route:
* Run checkdisk on your main drive to see if there are issues with it
* Run a memory check via boot disk/linux liveCD/your software of choice
* Install Whocrashed Resplendence Software - WhoCrashed, automatic crash dump analyzer and see if there are driver issues.
Reinstalling Windows may also determine if there are problems with your OS install. -
Hi sorry for the late reply.
I have tested the 3 methods of your suggestion but all have yielded negative results. I have yet to try the OS reinstall.
Can I know whether Sager laptops have a cmos battery like in normal motherboards? Could it be that the battery is weak and needs changing?
thanks

Not familiar with Clevo's yet, but I can say that a cmos battery shouldn't cause issues with Windows. That battery used to keep date and time and bios settings saved, but nowadays the cmos battery usually only saves the date and time. Bios info is saved on flash memory in most cases today.
Are you getting a blue screen when it shuts down or is it just turning off. If a blue screen flashes than boot with advanced options and disable auto restart and tell us the codes that are produced in the bsod. -
I had this happen once but during a restart. It was at the logo thing booting and the laptop just turned off, no reboot, cold off.
Is this something clevo's do, they are more prone to turning off opposed to restarting?
I think it was driver related in my case because I restarted because my GPU driver crashed (tried running both new nvidia ver) and right after it recovered I rebooted and that happened.
After next boot it was fine but I am rolled back to 175.50 drivers in hopes it is stable again... But try that, check your drivers see if anything update recently or anything new. -
-
I might try the reloading back of old drivers though. Mine is the old NP8650 with GT 260 card. I can get the old drivers from nvidia website? or Sager? -
-
The Sager ones should just flat out work though because thats what they approve.
I just dont get how a darn laptop can just turn off, I mean come on at least reboot but a flat out OFF? that's nuts. Never seen that before except for over heating, which was not the case here. -
I've always found troubleshooting these kind of issues to be a real pain in the ... if a format/re install is something you are comfortable with I would go that route. It could just be me but I love having a nice fresh install every now and then.

did you ever resolve this?
Having a similar issue but mine keeps going to the startup recovery dialogue no matter how i try to boot (boot normally, boot from cd, f8 to safe mode, f8 to startup repair).
ive had it running startup repair for the last hour with nothing seeming to happen. downloading hiren's now, what specifically do you guys use on it to start with? -
Check Hiren's list of programs and use the HDD tool that is compatible with your hard drive. They have diagnostic tools for many of the brands, if yours isn't listed use HDD Scan to test your hard drive for bad sectors. Also, us memtest to check your ram. If in your testing you can't find any issues with your hadware you can use the file wizard to pull all your important files and save them to an external drive before doing a clean install of windows.

I did a clean reinstall of win 7 but I don't think it helps.
The problem seems to have worsen.
I left my laptop there for a day, untouched. When I tried to power it on at night, it started and turned off right away. Tried turning on again, less than 1 sec later, it turned off.
Tried the 3rd time, it booted up till the loading of win 7 logo and it turned off againdid that 2 more times until I managed to load windows successfully
-
I carried out a Windows Repair during a failed bootup and I managed to capture 2 screenies after the result was out.
Hopefully folks here can help to diagnose the problem.
thanks a mil! -
Sorry, those screenshots don't help much at all.
My guess is bad RAM or a failing hard drive.
Run Memtest or something similar?
Try running with just one stick of RAM and then the other, see if that makes any difference. -
When I run memtest, should I choose the option "all unsed ram"? Thanks and sorry for the noobish question

Which version of Memtest are you running? I suggest Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool, it should start running as soon as it is booted.

If you're able to boot into Windows again, try running check disk. If you can't, boot into a Linux LiveCD. If that works, then it sounds as though your hard drive has failed. The Hiren's boot cd mentioned above is another good option to try to test it out.

thanks for all the suggestion..i will try it when i get back today.
Can i check on the hiren's boot cd? Do I burn it into a dvd-rom and insert in and then restart?
Sorry if i sound noobish...self diagnosing this for the first time -
Download Hirens, burn to a disc, and then boot from the disc. If you check their website you will be able to find the name of the program to run based on your brand of hard drive if you want to use the manufacturer's diagnostic tool or you can just run HDD scan. That's a generic disk check that will work for any model.
