Whenever I plug in my laptop the temperature goes from a steady 50 cesius gaming to 70-80+. What is causing this and how could it be fixed. Any ideas?

I don't have an answer, but I am sure you should mention what model laptop you have and what the specs are before someone else is able to provide you with one. Good luck!

Well its not really necessary lol but its a Sager 5797, the specs are nowhere near necessary for an answer seeing as this would happen on any laptop, and its not the battery as it overheats plugged in without the battery.

When you are gaming on battery, the laptop downclocks itself. So when you plug it in, it clocks up to full speed and generat more heat. In other words, open it up and clean it for dust and reapply thermal paste of you havent done this before.

Already reapplied thermal paste, I know it downclocks itself while on battery but temps shouldn't go from 50 to 100 just because its charging. Vents are clear completely, everythings clean. No idea why its so crazy

They will, basically when on battery then GPU and CPU are hardly used, plug it in and you get the full clocks on both so the amount of heat generated is far greater. 100+ does seem a bit concerning though I must admit.

Well thats the thing, I used it plugged in constantly for a year straight and only recently did it start doing this. So maybe a BIOS update or something is the only thing left I can thing of besides maybe fault heat sinks or something no idea.

Which as a note I'd like to add, shame on me for assuming Sager had actually APPLIED thermal paste when I bought it, I never checked and when I went looking now, come to find out it was never even there in the first place. So that was awesome.

Yes, when you post a question we do need to know what model it is, this is so that we can determine if it’s a known problem or issue.

When you say the temp is getting above 100, how are you getting this number? What program, what sensor?

You mention this happens when the battery is not even plugged in, is this correct?

You also mention you have repasted, what did you repaste? Both the CPU and GPU?

Did this problem start after you repasted or before?

If we are to help we need more information

    1) Temperature is coming from multiple programs, SpeedFan, Furmark, so forth.

    2) Happens with battery not plugged in.

    3) Repasted both

    4) About two months before

If I run without a charger, games will not crash, with a charger the video drivers crash about 5-10mins into anything graphically intensive.

K, this helps. Question, which sensor is giving you the high temperature? The CPU, GPU or a motherboard sensor.

Have you opened the laptop to see if anything looks discolored from high heat?

Just did, the charger was bad, it was overheating and making lots of odd noises, running off the battery a steady 50 degrees while gaming no crashes whatsoever, plugging in the faulty charger, crashes and temps shoot up like crazy.

Interesting, glad you found the problem. Why a faulty charger would cause the GPU to get hot makes no sense to me. (And I know intimately how all the circuits in a laptop work)

Do you have anyway of measuring the voltage coming from the faulty charger? I would be curious to know what it is.

I don't have a meter around me at the moment, I'll take a look at it tomorrow at work but yea me either, the charger still charges but it is definitely causing issues somehow.

Just read this thread, the one thing you could have mentioned to get an answer right away is saying whether your GPU really does downclock on battery or not.
