Hi everyone, recently I purchased a new WiFi card and trying to replacing them. After replacing the card, I found that it is not working so I change it back to the Realtek to get internet and download the driver, I keep swapping the cards around because somehow after installing the new driver, the Killer-1202 won't work.

As I take the Realtek out like the 10th time, it feel extremely hot, as taking it out, I notice that the CPU fan speed up, then slow down, then speed up and then slow down again, after the slow down, the computer shut itself off and all of that crazy fan speed happen in like 5s.

After the shutdown, I turn it on again and notice that this time the fan start at full speed, only the CPU fan is on full speed, the GPU fan is still normal.

I leave it for the whole night, try again in the morning and the same thing still happen. Then I leave it for another 6 hours, try to turn it on again, the same thing still happen.

At last, I tried to turn it on with only necessary component (GPU, CPU and RAM), I also swap difference RAM sticks, remove CMOS battery, pull out battery and power, after all that, it still won't turn on and now every times I turn it on, the CPU and GPU fan is on full speed.

Sorry for my English, please reply ASAP because I need this for my exam. Thanks everyone.

This is a tough one and it sounds like you tried everything we could suggest. The only thing I can think of is that there may have been some electrical discharge from you like static electricity which damages some part.

You can make sure the Realtek and Bigfoot drivers are uninstalled while having neither physically installed. The put in the original Realtek and reinstall those drivers. You can also try DriverSweeper to make sure they are both fully un-installed.

Did you remove the Realtek driver before installing the new card?

Were you physically removing and reinstalling the card while the laptop was powered on?? That's a big no-no.

Thanks for the reply, how fast does DriverSweeper work? Does it need to boot up to load DriverSweeper because my computer can't boot up and will shutdown after 10-20s
Thank you for the reply, I did remove the Realtek driver and reinstall it again to download the Bigfoot driver. Unfortunately, I physicalled removed and reinstalled the card while the laptop was powered on, because I need to change the Realtek back to install the driver for the Bigfoot.

YOU DID WHAT WITH THE LAPTOP POWERED ON?!?!?

Bro... you never plug and play anything with the laptop on. You should have downloaded the bigfoot drivers and left them, changed the card, then installed the drivers while offline... or took the laptop (being a laptop) next to a router or modem and used the ethernet cord.

It could be any number of things. You don't pull out parts while they're on. You need to get that checked under warranty and HOPE they fix whatever's broken for you.

Unfortunately, it is not under warranty, how much do you think they will charge just for looking at what wrong in the computer?

As mentioned the damage probably happened because the computer was on when you pulled the part. You will want to contact the original reseller you got it from to see what they charge for a diagnosis, probably around $50 plus shipping both ways. If its the motherboard its gonna cost a bit for a new one.

Do u think that big chance the motherboard is broken? How much will the motherboard cost? If the CPU is broken, is their any chance that it will even turn on? And I think if the GPU is broken, I think it still not effect the boot up?

Yes there is a good chance you shorted the motherboard causing irreparable damage to the power delivery on the motherboard.

Replacements are usually a few hundred dollars unfortunately.

Likely a bit more than that, though contact your reseller to check for you.

Does it worth it to repair the mobo? I'm planning to sell the CPU and GPU for $600 and the case for $800, then I'll buy a new laptop. I bought the laptop for $800

If you can get that then fair enough, but usually the parts go for a lot less than the machine as a whole.

Depends on what's selling best at the moment depending on where you can list it.

A replacement board will likely run you $300 to $400 (depends on your reseller's cost and their mark up). Tough break, Johnnqtvo! In the future, make sure the laptop is off and that battery and AC adapter are both removed. No power should be going to the laptop while you are touching the inside of it.

Good luck with in selling your parts. :)

If the CPU or GPU is broke the computer wont turn on. Prices for the motherboard will vary, but after seeing it many people have decided to put that amount to a whole new computer instead. I know Sager will not send motherboards individually, you have to send the whole computer in to get it replaced, that policy may vary depending on where you got your computer originally. I do not want to quote any prices, its best to contact your original reseller.

Is there anyways that u can test the keyboard if it still working properly? Last night, I tried to start the laptop with the fan pull out and it turned on, without turned off, but some keys on the keyboard is not working and I can't type the password. Is there any methods to test the RAM?

You can take it out and place it back in.

ram run it one stick at a time. You can also run memtest if you like.

I just got the price from a reseller, it cost $412 in total to replace the motherboard if the motherboard is dead, is it worth to repair it or sell it to buy a new laptop? Thanks

If you want to sell it and buy a P170SM-A or something, go right ahead. A 970M or 980M and 4810MQ would demolish your current system, and you could get a 3 year warranty if you have the money. Feel free to keep any current SSDs or anything.

That price seems right on par with what we normally see. It's up to you if its worth repairing. The NP9170 isnt too old that it may be worth it, but if you've been thinking about replacing it anyway I would go that route.
