    I'm looking to update my video driver. to which to update, for 9800GT running Vista ultimate 64?

    I have tried downloading from guru3d forceware 196.62 win7/vista64 - Didn't let me to install it.

    What have i done wrong :)?

    You need a modded INF file if you want desktop driver.

    Just stick to the Nvidia official drivers. You are asking for problems going with anything else. Eg. laptopvideo2go

    dont forget you need to clear all remnance of previous drivers in safe mode using something like driver cleaner pro.
    if youve not loaded new drivers before and want a step by step guide just holler.
