Hi, I am planning on buying an NP8662. I am going to use it to do large scale scientific simulations which often require leaving the computer on for very long periods of time (10+ hours). I am afraid that if I leave an overclocked Np8662 doing millions of calculations per second on for 10 hours that something horrifying will happen...?

I have a 17" notebook cooler and plenty of flat solid surfaces. But, is there anything else I should know about this? Or is it just not a good idea?

    Comments?

No laptop/notebook should have issues with being left on 24/7. I never turn mine off, and I've left games running for a full day with no issues.

Well...if you are doing a large scale scientific simulations, a desktop (or server) or, if you work at an academic institution, applying for access to a supercomputer is a better idea. A desktop is cheaper, more powerful, and easily upgradable. It is so much better to use a desktop rather than a laptop because you can overclock it more than you can a laptop and install watercooling so that you will be sure it won't overheat. I see no reason why you would need a laptop in this situtation.

As long as you keep it cool, you're fine. You said you have a notebook cooler, even better.

You could always replace the thermal paste they put on with AS5 or the like to make it even better ;).

Other then that, maybe just watch the temps while you're doing this just to make sure.

The NP9262 is engineered to be on 24/7. So I can tell you that I leave mine on quite a bit, and it's solid as a rock. It does get warm, but that's alright. It's not scalding hot.

Most notebooks are not meant to be left on 24/7, but the Clevo ones seem to handle it pretty well.

    ... granted that you:
    - do not close the lid of the notebook (which would envelope the heat)
    - make sure the fans/vents are clean
    - using it on a clean, hard, flat surface .... preferably a notebook cooler.

as for battery, you should really remove the battery if you leave it on for a week or more straight... unless you do the following.

to keep it healthy, the battery needs to get a full charge cycle (discharge in under 50% and recharged back to full) regularly.... like once a week.

    refer to the Battery Guide.

Doesn't this put it on standby anyway? From my understanding, in that state componants lay mainly dormant in my understanding, generating as little heat as required until you decide to flip back the monitor again. Please tell me if I'm wrong here, but normally my notebook is as cool as if I had turned it off, even when I return to it after a while.

It only goes into standby if that's what you want it to do ;) Some people make it so when they close the lid their computer still runs.
