Hi all,
Long time lurker, first time poster![]()
Anyways, I've been looking for a solid notebook with decent graphics. BUT, and this is a huge but, I've had a 100% failure rate with dGPUs within 3 years of purchase for the last decade or so. It didn't seem matter which brand the notebook is from, or if it was an AMD/ATI or nVidia GPU.
Intel parts on the other hand, never had one fail, so needless to say, I was thrilled to learn that intel has been making more power iGPUs within the last couple of generations. However, I've called around the major manufacturers, and nobody seems to offer anything with Iris Pro graphics (Apple excluded of course, but I wouldn't touch an apple machine if they paid me to, courtesy of apple customer service way back in the day).
So I guess what I'm asking is...
Are there any current Clevo Resellers that yall know of that is or will be selling a laptop with IrisPro graphics? Preferably no more than 2 generations old, but I'll take the hit on performance for reliability.
Thanks in advance!

On the current generation, most processors are going to have the intel i7 6700, which would be Intel HD 530 graphics. If you are looking for Iris Pro, there was the Clevo W740SU (Sager NP2740 ) which had an i7 4760hq and Iris Pro 5200 graphics on it. Not sure if there were other Clevo models that were out there, but I remember that one.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for the reply. I'll keep an eye out for one of those. That said, I remember that there are Clevo models that takes a full desktop CPU. Would it be possible to stick something like an i7 5775C in one of those?
Thanks! -

It wouldn't be. The motherboard would have to have the right socket for that specific processor. Then there has to be enough power to it and enough cooling to handle a desktop CPU. There aren't any Clevo models that use a 5th gen processor like that.

In addition to what @pat@XOTICPC said, the systems with desktop CPUs utilize dedicated graphics for the display (internal and external). No dGPU means no boot. :\
Most [current] Clevos offer Intel HD Graphics 520 - 530 as the base GPU. Iris Pro is hard to find in a Clevo system; they're (Clevo) aimed at power users, so most offer NVidia graphics. The W740SU was not a bad machine, though. -
I'm looking around trying to find a new one of those, not having the greatest of luck (has it reached end of sales?)...
In any case, since all of my previous notebooks died from GPU failures, I'm trying my best to avoid them. Hell, even my dell precision died because of the Quadro GPU went kaput last month. -

Most resellers/distributors are selling only current models in lieu of stocking new, previous generation models; you might have a tough time finding a "new" one (maybe "new - other" would be easier).
Oof! Those are expensive cards. But I understand the concern. dGPU failures are not uncommon, whereas CPU failures are not common. It all comes down to luck and how you treat the PC, really. -
Yeah, coastal Florida without air conditioning in the summer tends to be brutal for computers. Heat + salty air + humidity tends to be bad for computers, especially for heat sensitive components. Normally, I'd be content with desktop computers with big fans and whatnot, but that's not really an option for traveling. Sigh...

Intel are in a funny place with iris pro chips at the moment.

If I remember right, I don't think models with Iris Pro graphics were really available right away at launch of 4th gen processors. I think there were more models that came out later down the line, but not a lot at launch. I haven't really seen anything with them for 6th gen (at least with brands we carry). But Intel's ARK page does show there are some processors with them.

The chips are only really hitting around now so yes very much delayed.

Any idea whether Sager/ Clevo will make anything with the Iris Pro chips?

Not as of yet. Typically any new models are usually under NDAs anyways.

As Pat said, anything not announced if it exists can't be revealed.
