Hey guys, I want to buy a gaming/design notebook for school. I already know I want a Clevo, since they offer the best in terms of bang for the buck. I really want to get the 17 incher, do you guys think it will be that practical for me?

For a lot of students, the 17 incher isn't the most practical. If you plan on taking to lecture often, it'll be a hassle. Not only is it bulkier than the 15 incher, it also has far less battery life.

Do you have a set budget in mind with this notebook?

I had a sager 5792 throughout college, thing with the 17inchers is they are really to big to be portable enough to take to class regularly.
I used it as a desktop replacement in my dorm and it was great. Since its a laptop if you are desperate you can take it to class, but bring your charger haha - and again its really quite big.

Depends what you want to do I guess, just for gaming/homework and stuff in the dorm? Or do you want to take it to class with you...
Honestly after 4 years with the 17inch I can't wait to get my smaller 15.6 for the added portability, I just bought a larger 23inch monitor for when Im at home.

PS. if your looking to buy check out Malibal, they are really helpful and responsive.

My budget is about 1,800. But I really want to buy a tablet.

Hmm, that gives you several good options. Because your budget is so high, I'd definitely settle for no less than a 6990m, which leaves you with either the P150HM or the P170HM. I assume you will be taking your tablet to class in lieu of the laptop?

Be wary of tablets in the classroom! i never found them as easy/functional as having a laptop in class.

But if your settled on it, might as well go 17 inch and bring tablet to class.

In that case you might consider a NP8170 / P170HM.

I know I really like having a 17.3" in front of me... :)

In that case, your best bet would be to purchase the 170HM and look around for a good tablet deal. Good luck with your purchase!

No, heat is not really an issue on this model. You should see load temps between 70-90C depending on ambient temps and the surface you're working on. The casing should always be relatively cool to the touch. Here are some links you might find useful when looking for reviews though:

Hmm. That seems a bit high for that config. Have you applied the -$100 of $1500 are more?

Do you plan to be upgrading your RAM in the future? If you dont, I would suggest opting for the 4 SO DIMM and saving $50.

Another thing to note is that if you don't plan on applying thermal paste yourself, it would be wise for you to add on the IC diamond upgrade.

If you were to make these changes, your total should be $1499 after the discount. That leaves $300 for you to purchase a tablet with.

This Clevo model as well as the other have "world class cooling".

For all of the "horsepower under the hood" these are surprisingly cool running.

Check with members in the below thread for some good input on this. :)

Actually, there are several tablets that have portable keyboard docking stations that he may be able to use, such as the ASUS transformer.

I know that this is a notebook forum, but does anyone have any suggestions for any tablets, given my limited price range ($300)?

A good place to check for tablet deals is slickdeals.net. Right now, the best one that you could buy for under $300 is probably the Lenovo K1. The 7 inch verson of the Galaxy Tab is available as a refurb at Newegg.com.

If you can afford it, I'd get this: Newegg.com - Recertified: ASUS Eee Pad Transformer (TF101-A1) Refurbished Tablet NVIDIA Tegra 2 1.00GHz 10.1" Wide SVGA 1GB DDR2 Memory 16GB Flash HDD NVIDIA ULP GeForce

The reason for that one is so that you can purchase the docking station and keyboard in the future and use it as an android netbook. I'd think that this would be very helpful for you in your classes.
