So my 6990M gave out on me about a month after my warranty expired. :(

This is actually the third time this has happened to me with a mobile AMD card so needless to say I'm not looking to go AMD again... for now.

I'm looking to upgrade to the 680M but it looks like the cost hasn't budged since release despite being nearly twice that of its AMD counterpart.

So I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone expect a price drop to happen anytime soon or will I be waiting until the next generation of GPUs before the price even budges?

Im on a mobile so I can't see your sig. I'm guessing you have a HM model? So in that case you could go for the 7970M. It performs basically like a stock 680m, costs less and you won't have the enduro issues everyone is taking about because you have lasts years model which doesn't have enduro.

The price of the 680m won't drop at all I think. Even when the new generation comes out. And even if it does it won't be worth it opposed to next-gen. Have a look how much the 580m costs now.

It wont budge, the newest generation is not even going to be that much faster (ALA 485M to 580M) so it could be some time.

best bet would be to get it on ebay or the nbr marketplace. new price wont budge but actually will go up once the nextgen gpus are out and available quantity dwindles. unfortunately mobile gpus arent known to share the pricing tendencies of their desktop counterparts. so best thing to do is to either get a used card or get a new one as soon as possible, e.g. right when its released ;)

Prices tend to stay where they are at until the new ones are released then we might see it go down a little just to clear inventory. But thats usually when both will be available, and by then you'd probably want the new card.

Top end prices won't budge until the new line-up is released. Your best bet is to try and find a used one on ebay or CL if you want top of the line on a budget.

That's all very discouraging to hear... I guess the choice is either suck it up and get a 680M or side-grade and get a 675M.

Regardless, this will be my last gaming notebook. Mobile GPUs just don't seem to want to work with me. I use my notebook as my primary gaming machine and game just about every other day and this is what I've gone through:
2003 - GeForce FX Go 5600 - died after 2 years, out of warranty. I think it was in a Toshiba notebook.
    2005 - Mobility Radeon X700 - died after 1 year and 1 month, out of Acer's warranty.
2006 - skipped a generation and bought an Xbox 360 - never RRODd and still works to this day
2007 - GeForce 8600M GT - died after 1.5 years but Apple still replaced it for free since Nvidia was having issues with this card and told manufacturers it would replace them within reason. The new one actually outlasted the notebook's screen, trackpad, CPU fan. It was a Macbook Pro.
    2012 - Radeon HD 6990M - died after 1 year and 1 month, out of Malibal's warranty.

The card should have lasted longer than a year. I would still demand a replacement. If your reseller doesn't react, contact AMD directly. A warranty doesn't always end when the warranty period given by the seller ends.
