Yeah, you can upgrade to 1070. @thegh0sts can give you the steps. And you can use the new 780w psu.

me and @Coolane both use the MSI GTX 1070 which looks like this:

firstly, if you have a Gsync display in your laptop the image will look corrupted (like a deinterlaced image that looks like it stuck between a frame change) - this is because the motherboard does not recognise the 1070 as a Gsync compatible card. you'll need to flash the GPU to fix the screen corruption (you'll have to work through it) but it does mean you'll lose Gsync. a minor trade off but meh in the long run. i still have a copy of the vbios you'll need to flash and i am ok with sharing it.

we both use modded GTX 980 heatsinks to cool the 1070 because it has 2 banks of heatsink fins instead of the single heatsink fin of the 980M heatsink. below is the thread i made over at techinferno about the mod.

    https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/11137-p870dm-g-980dt-heatsink-mod-for-msi-1070/

finally, you don't need the 780W PSU since the GPU TDP is low that you won't even go over 330W. you'll be in a more advantageous position if you have the Prema BIOS.

Yeah, 780W for a single step down from top card is total over kill.

With the default vBIOS, a stable overclocking can bring you about 10% improvement on performance.
Probably you can use the 780W power supply, but I think 330W is sufficient.
If the system BIOS added the support for 1070 in the future, I guess G-Sync is possible. But so far there is no update BIOS for P870DM1 yet.

330W will be sufficient even with high CPU & GPU overclock. Don't worry about it.

i'd rather have the better performance of the 1070 (as much as it is TDP limited) over gsync. even though it is TDP limited it still runs better than the 980 desktop.

    so performance > gsync.

i'll wait till the GTX 11 series is out so i can get 4K gsync.

1070 will work fine but seriously 780W PSU with this config? Massive overkill, single 330W is fine!

yup...unless you're able to find 2 1070s that have the sli connector and fit within the existing chassis...even then that's difficult otherwise i would jump all over it.

The MSI 1070 being wider than standard MXM 3.0b size means no one has dropped the coin and given it a go yet for fear of it not fitting...

And the one guy who I know of bought a MSI 1070 with a SLI connector DARCODER has had problems with some of the panels he's tried

there are 1070s that are the same form factor as a GTX 980M, such as the zotac 1070, but neither have SLI connectors. if they did i would be all over it.

@DARCODER isn't even using a P870DM-G anyway so their problems are exclusively for an older model.

firstly, @DARCODER bought this through a taobao agent.

secondly, I have already checked and it's too wide to fit into the slave slot. the tab on the right will overlap the master GPU by < 1mm and sanding the PCB down is not an option if you like running the risk of owning a very expensive paperweight.

it's all been discussed before because i was definitely considering it since december 2016. But since the cards are expensive it's not really worth it for something that's pretty much transitional....something to stave off time till the GTX 11 series. by then, the GTX 1180 will be out and I'll be hankering for it in SLI.

besides, a single 1070 is good enough for most games at 1080p anyway.

yep, i baught from this taobao sellor ( very kind and pro) then he ship it to an agent. I used that gpu for a p377sma. after dremel the barebone, the old nice p377sma can clearly accept 2 1070n. i allready baught some parts to repair the motherboard ( i burnt my edp port) but i baught a p870km1g.

@DARCODER I recall you were having some display issues after installing a 1070n in the p377sm-a. Were those due to the burned EDP or some other reason?

    Have you tried SLI?

issue is with auo display ( maybe gsync disaply.... no proof) working great with original 120hz lg. i burn some parts by a mistake while i tried to make working the auo display. the edp port will be fixed soon once parts arrive. sli will work, gpu was tested in slave port too. this laptop is awesome with 1070n ( even sli with some little easy dremel ) if u like 1080p 120hz. i will try to see in a near futur if dp port can handle a 1440p 120hz so this last one can be modded to work inside instead of edp port.

In general GTX10 series cards require either eDP LCD panel and/or Optimus based laptop to work. Our GTX 1060 and 1070 cards are standard MXM3 size of 82x105mm so they fit inside without any case modifications. We tested them already in over 10 different Clevo models and few AW.

Yea, true, but unfortunately no SLI on the 1070...

To be fair, sli in such a machine would be a huge investment on an older platform, buying a single 1080 new machine would make more sense for most people.
