Is there any way to lower the fan noise? I just got my P170HM and just browsing the web, the fans are quite audible. Nowhere near as bad as when u turn them on full power with fn + 1, but its still very loud.

You can try turning down the power settings via the power icon to battery saver or balanced (and right click the hotkey app and change it there as well via power conservation modes). That should turn down the clocks on the CPU/GPU and let them run cooler.

Are you using it on a hard flat surface so that the intake fans on the bottom are clear?

Also check to make sure that you have the newest bios. All models should ship with the newer versions, but if yours is older it may not have the fan fix from the newer ones.

I bought my laptop late august and it just arrived today.

I check my BIOS version and its apparently American Megatrends Inc. Version 4.6.4 with date 7/7/2011.

As it does not seem like this is a clevo/sager bios version, I guess I should probably update it right?

If you just bought it from us, then don't worry about the Bios. It should be the newest version 1.00.12 which was released in July. Try out the other options first before worrying about the bios. Version 1.00.14 was just released in the last few days, but the changes will be slight.

I have already turned down the power options on the "Power Life" program that I installed from the drivers CD down to Energy Star and the default windows power plan program down to power saver. The fan is still fairly loud. It does however keep my gpu and cpu at around 40 C when I am browsing the web and stuff.

Is there any way for me to manually control the fans? I tried using SpeedFan, but no fans showed up.

You can always get a closed headphone if you really cant stand the noise of the laptop fans.

well if you think about it for a moment, the 580M is much much much more powerful than the 470M. And it's a different generation.

Unfortunately not at this time. The fans are controlled via an embedded fan controller, which SpeedFan does not yet have access to. Other than FN+1 to go to max fans, there isn't anything else that can be handled via software. It's always possible that if/when they update SpeedFan that support could be added.
