Well, I've been working on it for about 2 hours now, and I have basically no experience with vista. I can't for the life of me get it to connect to the internet through the built-in ethernet. I know its a problem on the computer because I am using that same cable to connect with my ancient emachines laptop running XP. I've tried everything (I think) that vista has suggested. The status reads that it is sending information and not receving it. Pinging the IP in the cmd prompt confirms it.
Any Help?
Thanks!

Disable all firewalls.
And then try to ping out again. -
I forgot to mention I did that. I disabled user account control too.
-
hmm... okay, lets see. 0% lost now. still can't connect.
-
you can force a re-install of the ethernet.
- go into Device Manager
- uninstall the Ethernet Network Adapter
- restart PC
- Windows should then re-detect and re-do settings for the ethernet. -
still nothing. :/
-
its gotta be something about the notebook config or the cable itself
can you just try another cable (i know it works in another computer, but humor me)
Is the network adapter enabled in the BIOS?
As well as do you have an external ethernet adapter (USB) to test on the notebook... that can pretty tell you if its the notebook's hardware or software thats causing the issue. -
second cable works on frumpy XP computer, same results (i.e. no results) on new sexy.
-
I got a few more suggestions:
- do you have the USB ethernet adapter to test with? it will help determine if its a software issue or a hardware issue.
- I would recommend to use a bootable OS on CD or flash drive (like Windows PE or Linux Live CD)... like Knoppix
If the live OS works with the ethernet, than its definitely Windows settings. (granted that the Linux or Win PE that you use successful detects the ethernet adapter) -
I'm pretty sure it's windows settings because it picks up the ethernet cable being plugged in. Its got this nice little nigh-useless graphic that goes something like this
computer-----------ethernet modem-------x------internet
but that doesn't make sense to me, because if that was true, than this comp shouldn't be able to connect... right? -
unless if your router is MAC filtering.
or your Network settings is not set to auto (and left on a Static IP)
Look at the IPCONFIG details to see if all of the info is correct (IP, DNS, etc...) -
whenever it tries to setup it says its using WAN and pppoe, and sometimes asks for a username and passoword. This seems wrong, because not only do I not have a username or password, I am certainly not trying to connect to a wireless network.
-
no router btw
-
are you connecting directly into the modem??
if you are, you must power off the modem, wait for 20-30 secs, then power it back on... it should work. -
Okay, question man. What built in ethernet do you have is it the INTEL 4965?
-
Yes, it is... Bad? (Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN)
It looks like i can't enable it, because my user manual says that the orange light thats on indicates bluetooth is activated, but not the WLAN. What i don't get is why the ethernet and the wireless don't work, when the only problem i can find is with the wireless. Hmm... -
I thought you were trying to connect hardwire ethernet... not wireless.
because theres a toggle for that notebook to enable/disable wifi, and a separate one that toggles for bluetooth.
(all in the beginning of the manual) -
Yeah, i am try to do hardwire ethernet. There are some neighbor wireless' that i tried to connect to, just to see if i could. I couldn't. I tried to use the toggle (fn+f11) but it did nothing for the WLAN. Because whenever I try to connect to the ethernet, it brings up a dialog with WLAN, i thought they may have been in some way connected.
Thanks a lot for the help by the way. -
Okay, looks like there is a misprint on the keys and the control is fn+f12, which turns on the wireless... not that this actually seems to help. super!
-
you can just disable the wireless adapter (in Device Manager) when you are not using it.
so what kind of internet do you have?
- Cable: should be plug and play
- DSL: can be plug and play.... or requires PPPoE login to work
are you connecting directly into the modem?
- if so, did you try to (disconnect the ethernet cable) do a power down on it for 30secs, then power it back up, let it finish initializing (the lights stop blinking), then connect it to the notebook. -
There it is!
I tried a different method of restarting my cable modem, and it worked. I can't actually shut my modem down because it has a battery back up. After the successful reboot, it worked. Thanks m8. Cheers. -
cool, glad it was something simple.
-
and now i have a 3 page thread on how i can't restart a modem.

LOL
At least there are a lot of valuable posts on what to do/look for from Gophn if you are having connectivity issues.
