I am probably getting a couple M570RU-U in a close out sale, and I have a few questions.

Do I need to worry that is no longer has a warranty? Even tho the unit is brand new clevo says the unit is too old to warranty. Does this seem strange?

Does anyone know the lowest end CPU I can put in it? The manual says t7100, but will any socket p work?

How hard is it to get a backlit keyboard for this?

Thanks for your time. Hope to be seeing you in the owners thread soon.

I have never heard of a backlit keyboard for the 570 (I own one, t9300, 8800m gtx). I bought the 3 year warranty from xotic, but I have had mine since Feb 08 without any issues, just make sure to take off the back panel and clean out the cooling system regularly. No warranty does seem strange though, but I guess the reasoning is they no longer manufacture them and spare parts are probably pretty sparse. I tried to upgrade to an x9000 a few months ago and they said they no longer carried them. As far as CPUs go I would stick to the manual, (PENRYN CHIPS ONLY). It's a great system and I would recommend it if you are getting a good deal (mine was $3200 in Feb 08), even w/o warranty. Make sure you load the latest kbc firmware.

For warranty info, it has to be covered by the vendor you are buying it from... if you know the OEM that originally sold it (like Sager, Pro-Star, Eurocom), you can contact those vendors with the serial number and they would be able to tell you the warranty on the barebones.

As for keyboard, there is no backlit keyboard available for Clevo M570 notebooks.... we have attempted it before... not very successful. But a backlit keyboard is not important since most people only want one for bragging rights... no real functionality in it since most people know how to touch-type and doesn't look at the keyboard while playing games.

    Thanks for the replies.
    How often?
You can find them on ebay...
    Where Would I find that?
Clevo sent me to the vendor for my area to ask. I emailed and asked them If a new item bought from a vendor today would have a manufacturer warranty. 'Goldenstar' said...
"No. That model M570RU is out of warranty to us - not current model."
    So I was confused.
Well I guess I'll make do. It is important to the way I work (in the dark) and never having mastered the arcane art of touch typing. I can always get an external one.

You can still get a warranty for it through a very reputable company like www.safeware.com .... probably the best in 3rd party insurance for electronics.

You should realize that you can still see the keyboard very well in the dark since a bright screen will still light up the white letters (on black keys) of the keyboard.

.... I know, I am in a dark room now typing this and can full see my notebook's keyboard. ;)

just make sure to take off the back panel and clean out the cooling system regularly.
    How often?

Answer: I do it once every month or two. Requires only a small phillips and compressed air. Be sure to hold fans in place so you don't spin them faster than designed. Sometimes a damp cloth if it is really messy, like you've been in an exceptionally dusty environment.

I tried to upgrade to an x9000 a few months ago and they said they no longer carried them.
You can find them on ebay...

Answer: an example of how they don't carry many parts for the system anymore (which they would use to uphold warranties)

Make sure you load the latest kbc firmware.
    Where Would I find that?

here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=389083 ... it says only for Sager np5793 but will work on any m570RU-U, but has sager branded boot screen.

    I am back again.

I am looking for a "Value" (Cheap) CPU to put in this thing.

Looking at List of Intel Penryn CPU's I see several generations, and lots of sSpec designations.
Froogleing the sSpecs shows wide variation of prices and just plain silliness.

Does anyone have a handle on what I should get for less than 100USD shipped? Or what is the best deal per MIPs?

    Also I got a Quite from www.safeware.com for 55USD for a 2 year warranty. That's awesome!

Look at the standard voltage CPU's. I believe the options for the M570RU-U on xoticpc (np5793) were in the T8100 to T9500 range, with exception of the x9000. If you could find one these days, I'd say an 8100 would be pretty cheap. I wouldn't go lower than that or it would not be worth getting such a capable notebook. I would recommend the T9300, not much multiplier boost over the T8300, but 6mb cache, and probably much less than the price list on "wikipedia", if you can find it. You are looking at original prices...

It seems from This it seems the Mermon CPUs are very similar to the Penryns performance wise?

Again, what I am doing is Googleing (Froogleing) the sSpec designation and seeing prices vary widely based on no pattern.

Is there any doubt that the M570RU-U will work with the Mermon CPUs?

Merom chips have the same architecture as Penryns, main difference is die-cast size, which gives you better power/heat performance and higher speed with identical clock speed. Who cares about compatibility, seriously, get a Penryn.

    I saw a few t7100's, but a T7500 (SLA44, SLAF8) is 2.2G and the same price.

I thought to follow up on this.
Safeware does not sell manufacturer warranties. If you look at there policy item 15 specifically says that.

So no manufacturer defects will be covered by them. I asked if they knew of anyone. They said no.

Anyone have an idea where I can find some one to warranty my new laptop?

I have no idea, but you could just get accidental damage coverage and if snuffs out on you, throw it in a pool or something... j/k that would be dishonest.
