Just curious if anyone here has disassembled their fans for a good cleaning/lubrication. It this possible and is it something that will extend the life of the fans?

I clean my fan blades about every two or three weeks. The motor should be lubricated annually. Just a very tiny bit of silicone oil will do the trick.

So you just lift the fan off the motor to apply oil? That is my main question here.

No, you cannot lift the rotor from the fan.
And no you do not need to lubricate the fan. It is almost industry standard for fans to lat 10,000hrs. A good fan will last over 100,000hours
Just clean the dust off of the blades, dont worry about the rest.

What K-TRON said. The rotor cannot be removed. But if you still want to get lubricant in there, use a needle syringe.

80c should not cause a bluescreen though. I have hit 85 when I accidentally left it on low fan speed, playing Crysis. eek.

You can always buy a new card from someone or on ebay, etc. to replace your old one. How long have you had you notebook?

Got mine in March 2008, I'll let you know if anything happens in the next few months... I have seen a few folks here posting about issues with theirs; all of them seem to be about 2 years old.

yeah, i asked the customer support rep and he said about 1-3 years was about the average lifespan of that card unfortunately. hopefully all goes well with yours. its 350$ plus shipping for a REFURBISHED 8800M gtx. im going desktop now. again good luck with you, i will keep checking around these forums for a few months to see if anything else like this happens.

Hum 350 for refurbished... its like 600 for a new one. It is messed up that nvidia's flagship 8M series card dies so quickly. I guess all I can do is keep it as clean as possible and hope for the best. If it dies I will probably get a 9800 GTS though.

good find, rather than baking the whole board, i will give this a try becuase i got nothing to lose. will post the results whenever i get around to actually cooking the thing xD

EDIT: well i just did it and despite looking a little charred it worked for the first test of 3dmark06, past where it usually got, but middle of the second test it blue screened again. might light it up again later, but so far it didnt work =/

Just had a crazy though. What in the world is a "refurbished" graphics card?! Maybe they just 'cook' it in a more controlled environment...
