I have had this problem on this notebook for quite some time and I really would like to know why once and for all.

Basically what is happening is when I play just about any game it starts to 'throttle' and go back to normal performance. Frequency is dependent on the game and intensity of play. SpeedFan tells me it is what is listed under 'Temp1' whose chip is labeled 'ACPI' that is getting hot and dropping like a stone when the PC throttles. I cleaned it out thoroughly and several times. This thing is completely dust free and I have NOTHING blocking any of the vents.

The pc worked fine for over a year when I got it then this problem started. I would send it in, comes back working for a while then a few months later it would start again. When it was under warranty I had to have it sent in twice for this problem, both times the fixes were temporary, obviously. One time they said they just replaced the RAM, they were never able to tell me what they did the second time and were generally uncooperative (cyberpowerpc.com, btw). I recently replaced the RAM again since it was relatively cheap now, about $30 for 4 gigs from crucial.com No change. Only thing I can think of if it is the RAM is that the notebook is pickier about RAM specs than crucial believes.

    Any help would be appreciated.

ACPI is your processor (sort of), not physically but almost. Make sure your vents and radiator are clean.

I hear that a lot but this thing is extremely clean of dust. I opened it up and blew it out with air duster. Only dust in there now is what ever has collected since about 10 hours ago.

Hmmm.... tell me, when your ACPI reaches 90C what temp is your CPU and GPU.

Tends to throttle at 82C when it throttled last one of the cores was at 80C, second one was at 77C and GPU was at 54C

What CPU do you have? It should throttle at 90C.

Intel core 2 extreme X9100. I got the ACPI up to 85C and the hotter of the core to 82C just now. This is all according to SpeedFan btw.

EDIT: Alright been stressing it, ACPI was at 85C, it spiked to 90C suddenly then throttled. core 2 was at 83C and core 1 was at 80C.
EDIT2: Just throttled at 86C ACPI, cores at 83C and 82C

Ok, seems ok. Your problem is the CPU, it's overheating.
I think you should repaste it.

I've actually tried that in the past with no improvement, but I can try again later today.

But something is wrong, and to me it looks like your CPU is overheating.
